Historia
It's scary how much life can change in an instant. One minute I'm preparing for a new school year in my San Diego town, and the next I'm being ripped from my childhood home. Making the cut from my father's death two years ago that much deeper. Not only am I being forced to leave a place that reminds me so much of him, but I'm being forced to move hundreds of miles across the country to a city I've only learned about through Mom and social media.

Must read!!
Revisado: 04-16-25
Dark bully romance. Enemies to lovers, high school setting with some OW drama. This story follows Crayton and Rebecca (Bex). She recently moved to NYC and is enrolled to attend a prestigious private school. As soon as he sees her, it doesn’t go well because she reminds him of his mother, who was a horrific person responsible for his deepest and darkest traumas.
Bex attempts to hold her own but the bullying and all the drama from the OW in the story is a lot. She has some supportive friends, the secondary characters in our story, and that’s the only way she gets through this.
Bex is SA’d after a party and that is really the turning point for the MMC when he realizes that his feelings of protectiveness and care for her are a lot stronger than his feelings of hate, and at that point, they become inseparable. The other woman in the story is not happy about this turn of events, and she really ups the ante to hurt the both of them, going so far as to frame Crayton for a crime that he did not commit. Don’t get it twisted, he has done some things in the book, but he actually did not do the thing he was accused of.
Our story ends with him behind bars, essentially doing time for not the original crime, but a lesser degree. But him and Bex are committed to making the relationship work until his release.
This is book 1 in what will be a series of interconnected standalone’s. So we already have a little insight into what book 2 is going to be about at the end of this book. I love the story. The writing is amazing. I literally could not put it down , it kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The spice is so, so good. This is a definite must read.

I don’t believe I was the intended audience for this audiobook. The female narrator made it so I could not to continue and I don’t intend to attempt any other books in the series for that reason.

Historia
Venesa Andersen has never been good. She wasn't good enough for her parents, and she isn't good enough for the gangster uncle who took her in after they died. But she's cunning. Beautiful. Dutiful to her uncle's demands. And she doesn't have time for a moral compass, anyway. When her runaway cousin returns to their coastal southern town, she brings a man with her . . . and Venesa soon realizes he's the only one who's ever seen her for her. There's just one problem: she can never have him.

Dark reimagining, inventive and good
Revisado: 01-27-25
I enjoyed this story. I thought this was an inventive take on a Disney classic. It did drag some but overall it’s worth the read. The narrators were excellent and very much added to the vibe of the book fitting the characters perfectly.

Too long with too many story inconsistencies and I’m just confused!!
Revisado: 01-09-25
🌶️: 2.5
This is book 2 of a duet that features the same couple.
I was very excited to start this book because book 1 was such a slow plot build so I thought that book 2 would start off strong and just keep that momentum. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
First off, and my biggest complaint is the number of inconsistencies in the information told to us as a reader.
For example, book 2 picked up right where 1 left off and the FMC was talking about her mom passing as if we knew that at the end of book 1. Also, there was never any indication she heard what the MMCs father had disclosed that night yet she just casually mentions to her brother she needs to find out if it’s true. It’s like the author thought she told us this and didn’t, and I was left very confused. So much I went back to reread certain points to see what else I missed. Those are holes you as a reader shouldn’t have to work to uncover.
There was even a point where the FMC was acting like she was finding out information for the first time, even though it was told earlier in the book and she even had reacted to it at that point in the book so she very much knew. I’m sorry it might be nitpicky, but it felt like the author got confused about what was told to us and what wasn’t told to us.
This book was exaggerated, lots of fluff, it dragged, it was repetitive and could have easily been 200 pages, if not less. I have never given a book a one star rating before. If that were the case, I would have DNF’d the book. Which at that point, I wouldn’t even provide a rating. But I bought the audiobook so I was committed to finishing it. But the inconsistencies in the stories, and the confusion that that left me with, was the most frustrating part of this whole process and it is the reason why I just cannot recommend this book.

Historia
Rainer Torrence is everything I could have wanted in my life and more. He became my best friend when I was 13 years old. From then on, we were inseparable. He was my first love and my first heartbreak. But I always thought it was forever. Until his father died and things went bad. Then suddenly he disappeared. Ten years and I didn't see or hear from him. Then came the call I'd been praying for - he was back in town. Only the man I remembered is not him. This man is quiet, deadly, and so incredibly beautiful.

Missed opportunities
Revisado: 12-31-24
🌶️: 2
Second chance romance. OW drama. Slightly dark with some recall of past events. This follows Emily and Rainer. The book is told in alternating past and present chapters which is something that I like, as I think it adds to the story, however, not sure it did anything here. The main characters are childhood best friends so all of the past chapters are focused on the dynamics of their friendship, and ultimately their realization they want more and moving toward that. Again, there was nothing significant revealed during this time other than showing that they went from a friendship to more. At the very end of the past chapters, after the MMCs father passed away, was when the real purpose of those chapter came to be understood as this helped us understand what happened that caused the MMC and the FMC to be separated. There is some other woman drama in these chapters courtesy of one of the girls he is hooking up with.
The book starts in the present timeline, 10 years since the FMC has seen the MMC. He’s back in town so naturally she wants to go and see him. When she gets to the bar he owns and sees him, it’s very clear that he doesn’t recognize her, which is hurtful to her, even though her appearance has changed significantly since the last time they saw each other.
Ultimately, she decides not to tell him who she is straight away, and she sort of infiltrates their friend group as him and her start to sleep together. He’s very clear that this will never be more than what it is. And the FMC knows that he is in love with his best friend, who also brings some drama with her but not in a mean girl way. Her and the FMC share a unique relationship.
What we learn is that him and his best friend had gone through a very traumatic experience when they were younger, so after he last saw the FMC. And this traumatic past has led to some distorted memories for him, which is why he didn’t initially recognize her.
This book was just OK for me. I didn’t particularly care for the FMC, which is unfortunate since the entire book is her point of view. The self
loathing was too much. And the way she just accepted any scraps from the MMC was just not it for me. I listened to the audiobook and that too, just wasn’t enjoyable. The way the scenes were voiced didn’t match what was going on a lot of the time. Except the spicy scenes. I think this book had potential but sadly, fell flat.

Review for audiobook only
Revisado: 10-20-24
This audiobook was so difficult to get through. I tried to get a refund but it would not allow it, which is the only reason, and I mean the only reason I powered through. The female narrator did not narrate this story to do it justice. There was no change in voice to match the scene. She whispered everything. Honestly, it was a little weird and I don't mean to be rude but I am just so lost in understanding how anyone thinks that's how an audiobook should go. Her attempt at the male voice was equally not in line with what you would expect from a story. I do not recommend this audiobook at all.

Revisado: 07-22-24
Good ending to the series. The narrators did a good job as well. Overall, I did feel the series dragged in several areas and could have been three books with no loss of plot intention.

However, if you like your romantic comedy with darkness and humor, and all of the things that make a good book, this is definitely for you… the story perfection…the narration is perfection.
