Historia
Like your mysteries cozy and set during the Golden Age of Crime? This is the first audiobook in the Posie Parker mysteries, although this novel can be enjoyed as a stand-alone story in its own right. Set in London in 1921, Murder Offstage is full of intrigue and red herrings. When Posie Parker’s childhood friend is robbed of a priceless jewel and becomes a suspect in a cold-blooded murder case, budding detective Posie vows she will clear his name.

Okay story. No idea about the era.
Revisado: 02-29-20
An okay story, if all little formulaic.
Unfortunately details of the era (1921) are frequently crashingly wrong. From plastic seating in cafes to characters always referring to WW1 as "The Great War" in day to day conversation and many other jarring examples that jolt you out of the story. A Dick Van Dyke impression of the early 1920s.
Better research would elevate the author to "but the next book" status.

Historia
Captain Keyes is loved by the public but hated by Command. He captains the UHS Providence, an aging supercarrier and the last human ship not dependent on dark tech - technology humanity has used to rule over the galaxy since barely defeating the Ixa in the First Galactic War. Dominance has come at a cost. Over the decades, old allies have grown resentful, and when dark tech itself fails, Captain Keyes’ predictions start coming true: those old allies are now enemies.

This is an enjoyable space opera, not as good as The Black Fleet books, but solid and enjoyable.

Historia
We had 20 short years of peace. Twenty years to put worlds back together. Twenty years for Captain Vin Husher to convince us the aliens would return. We didn’t listen. Warmonger, we called him. Washed up, we called him. But now, the enemy has returned, with high-tech weaponry well beyond anything of which humanity has dreamed. If Husher and his ragtag crew can’t manage to stop them, they will smash us.

Not as good as the first Ixan Trilogy
Revisado: 01-12-20
The Ixan Trilogy was quite good. But in this series the author has ran out of steam. The political elements are all completely unnuanced cliches, and every other ship that fights an alien explodes in about 30 seconds. I couldn't get through it.

Good book, listen to earlier in the series first
Revisado: 03-05-19
enjoyed this book. the pacing is better than in earlier books within the series, which suffer from a lull and then periods of rapid storytelling. However the entire series is worth listening to. Though the books very significantly in character.

Dull story compared to the series usual standard
Revisado: 01-26-18
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The solution is strikingly obvious from about 1/3rd of the way into the story... it takes the characters a long time to get to it, which distracts from the story considerably. There's also less detail of the era and setting than some of the earlier books.
Would you be willing to try another book from Carola Dunn? Why or why not?
Yes, the series is generally entertaining.
Have you listened to any of Lucy Rayner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The accents and pronunciation in earlier books hit some pretty low notes, but seem to be considerably improved this time around.
Was To Davy Jones Below worth the listening time?
Yes, but not the best of the series.

Good fun, likable characters
Revisado: 12-30-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
These mysteries are great fun, if not always quite technically correct (you'd think it was around 10 years later than the date stated by some of the references).
And as many reviewers have mentioned, the accents and pronunciation can sometimes be distracting. The middle and upper class accents are fair, with occasional slips, but the working class and regional accents are pretty poor. But not enough to do too much damage to the story.

a very few good ideas with a lot of nonsense
Revisado: 06-26-17
this book has a few good ideas and tracks some Trends in a probably quite accurate way. However it fills in with a lot of nonsensical speculation and padding that significantly diminishes the overall idea. It was a struggle to get through to the end as spurious speculation was repeated again and again and a gain.
