Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

I Got Bored. Love Carey Mulligan
Revisado: 11-14-24
I know this is not a popular opinion but for me it dragged on and I was bored about 1/3 through and was shocked it wasn't near the end. It's a fascinating concept, but didn't hold my interest. I also began to dislike the protagonist a bit; she's selfish and a bit rude. Carrie Mulligan is spectacular, especially with her magnificent British accent, but the story didn't hold me. At this writing (Nov. 2024) the book has a 4.8 rating, so obviously I'm in the minority! Note to the Audiobook's director: Please check pronunciations! Ms. Mulligan would have no way of knowing how to pronounce "La Jolla" (La HOY uh) but it should have been checked! And "lichen" is LY-kin, not LEH-chin. it's distracting and makes the production seem a bit unprofessional. I'm happy that so many loved the book. Just not for me. I'm on to my next Inspector Gamache tale.

Historia
The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful but slowly going under - maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

Magnificent Narration, Great Story
Revisado: 07-30-24
Maggie Gyllenhaal's crisp, easy way of speaking is among the very best in narration. I'll be searching for her other titles. Sylvia Plath's story is intriguiging-- sad but also nostalgic. Esther is a sympathetic character, with her sudden onset of mental illness. She's not always likable-- she can be thoughtless and unkind-- but I always wanted to know what came next. This is a thinly-veiled story of Plath herself, a troubled, brilliant women. Highly recommend.

Historia
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1974 and the culmination of a life's work, The Denial of Death is Ernest Becker's brilliant and impassioned answer to the "why" of human existence. In bold contrast to the predominant Freudian school of thought, Becker tackles the problem of the vital lie: man's refusal to acknowledge his own mortality. In doing so, he sheds new light on the nature of humanity and issues a call to life and its living that still resonates more than 30 years after its writing.

Dry. Dull. Compiles Dead Male Psychologists' Work
Revisado: 10-25-23
I was excited about this book. The title sounds so interesting and I believe this is considered a classic, though very old. I could barely get through it. Could not be more dry, like listening to an advanced college lecture where you're not understanding a word and are falling asleep.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Ridiculous ending
Revisado: 10-06-23
Astoundingly unethical, unlikeable characters moving through a wildly unrealistic storyline. I tried. I really did. But I couldn't bring myself to care what happened to any of these many characters. I don't usually yell at my car dashboard, but I sure did when the twist of this story finally dropped it's towel. Stupid and insulting to readers.

In Deep Hole, one of the world’s foremost crime novelists crafts a sweet, poignant romance novella that could only come from his perfectly calibrated sense of time and place. It incorporates fights and misunderstandings and rejection, and is set against the backdrop of a quiet surfing town in Rhode Island where everyone knows each other’s business—and pleasure.

This is a classic for a reason. It's informative, though heartbreaking and enraging. This narrator is perfect. Thank you to whoever made the choice to not have a 25-year-old narrate,-- the author was in her fifties when this was written. Very informative, eye opening, and deeply empathetic.

Tessa Wakefield has her hands full juggling a cozy craft store, her crazy family, and two men who’d rather poke out their eyes than describe themselves as cute, which they totally are. Cute, charismatic, and occasionally on her mind when she’s not stumbling over dead bodies and using her newfound sleuthing skills to track down murderers. Lucky she’s an excellent multi-tasker...because digging beneath Cape Discovery’s surface can unearth secrets that kill.

A Light-hearted, Funny Good Time
Revisado: 03-24-22
Sarah Mollo-Christensen is very talented and understands fully the humor in this book. I usually read nonfiction, but I realize I was overdue for something that was just fun and not dark and depressing. The main character is very likable and anyone who loves cats and/or knitting will surely appreciate this tale. I've never knitted a stitch in my life but felt lifted up by this oddly cheerful murder mystery!

My Favorite of the Series So Far
Revisado: 01-10-22
Ralph Cosham's feels like that of a good friend after listening to his narration of the first seven Gamache books. I love these characters and I love Three Pines and find myself wishing it was a real place. Louise Penny's work is magnificent here. A couple of the previous stories were a little over the top for me, but this was perfect. I'll be starting book 8 immediately. having always been a reader of nonfiction, I'm thrilled that I found these books as my first dive into a fictional mystery series. Ms. Penny's work helps keep me sane in these difficult times. When things are hard, I escape to Three Pines with Mr. Cosham, Inspector Gamache, and the whole cast of characters. I simply love these audiobooks.

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is on break from duty in Three Pines to attend the famed Winter Carnival up north. He has arrived in this beautiful, freezing city not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. Still, violent death is inescapable—even here, in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society, where one obsessive academic’s quest for answers will lead Gamache down a dark path.

Liked it, but so much repetition.
Revisado: 12-28-21
This book needs to be read after A Brutal Telling, as that mystery comes very much into play again. The overall story is repeated, but I would have been lost if I hadn't read the previous book. I believe some of these can easily be read without the previous mystery, but this is not one of them.
This is my least favorite Ganache take so far, and I LOVE the character. The endless historical details bored me. History buffs might thoroughly enjoy it.
The story of what happened to Gamache and his officers was excellent, and given to the reader in pieces throughout, which was exciting and beautifully done.
If I had to hear poor Ralph Cosham repeat the words "the Literary and Historical Society" one more time, I would've stopped listening. It was relentless!!!! SO MUCH REPETITION of things like this-- it's annoying and jarring and took me out of the flow of the story.
Mr. Cosham, by the way, is a jewel. He has a very unique voice and is perfect for this series. His voice is actually quite comforting, which is lovely in these hard times.
