The first chapter is…unique
Revisado: 04-04-25
No matter how unlikely the plot, I have NEVER been disappointed by John Scalzi. The characters he creates are recognizable and relatable. The worlds he populates are weird and wonderful and the plot deftly swings between horrific and humorous moments.

The timbre of the voices
Revisado: 12-10-24
A bit too much background music when implying tension or danger or suspense. The vocals were enough without it

New narrator good but not as good as the original
Revisado: 11-04-24
Love the story line. Wish the original narrator had been retained. The replacement isn’t bad at all but India’s personality came alive in book one. She’s a quirky character and the narrator captured that perfectly. The replacement tries too hard with Willlie and it’s just hokey.

Why did you change the narrator?!
Revisado: 11-01-24
Unfortunately, the new narrator has dulled the wonderfully quirky India Steele’s character. She’s not a bad reader but the original Miss Steele’s voice was uniquely suited to the character. Sometimes I laughed just listening to her delivery of her lines. In addition, the American characters’ voices (especially Glass’ cousin) are too forced and hokey.
I’ll keep listening but I miss the first narrator very much.

Historia
Newly widowed and trying to cope with her grief, Winnie Mae Chisholm moves from Tennessee with her teenage son, Pax, to Oregon, hoping the change will let them both heal and move on. She’s warned when buying their new home that the next door neighbor, Mr. Fisher, is a famous recluse and no one has seen him in years, but that’s fine with her—she’s looking for quiet. She’s not going to get it, however, because when Pax meets the neighbor, he discovers that the reason Mr. Fisher hides from the world is that he isn’t actually from this world.

I loved this book (I haven’t read any Kevin Hearne that I didn’t love so no surprise there) but being simultaneously captivated and depressed by a story makes writing a review difficult. It’s a wonderful tale wrapped around some very heavy truths. Absolutely read and enjoy The Hermit Next Door and then find some waterfront property and imagine a better world is possible.

I’ve heard that it is but I hope that it isn’t the last book of the series. These novels are finely constructed. I’ll miss the characters, the scenery and the murders.

It will appeal to anyone on some level
Revisado: 04-26-24
I selected this book because I mistakenly believed it was my book club’s next read. It’s not my genre of choice at all…and yet I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone regardless of your reading preference . Up until almost the very end I could not imagine what the resolution would be. I certainly did not expect to dissolve into tears.

A “critical thinking” handbook
Revisado: 07-29-21
Please don’t misunderstand me. I’ve read a couple of sci-fi/fantasy books like this one recently and I like them. I guess it’s my personality. The characters are enjoyable, the story is well-told and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. The narrative takes a backseat to lessons on problem solving and critical thinking, however. This is something the population of Earth needs to learn to do better. 👍🏼👍🏼

More than two centuries after World War III poisoned the planet, the final bastion of humanity lives on massive airships circling the globe in search of a habitable area to call home. Aging and outdated, most of the ships plummeted back to Earth long ago. The only thing keeping the two surviving lifeboats in the sky are Hell Divers - men and women who risk their lives by skydiving to the surface to scavenge for parts the ships desperately need.
