Historia
Interim sheriff Elizabeth "Bet" Rivers has always had one repeat nightmare: a shadowy figure throwing a suspicious object into her hometown lake in Collier, Washington. For the longest time, she chalked it up to an overactive imagination as a kid. Then the report arrives. In the woods of the Cascade mountain range, right in her jurisdiction, a body floats to the surface of Lake Collier. When the body is extricated and revealed, no one can identify Jane Doe. But someone must know the woman, so why aren't they coming forward?

Classic Cozy Mystery
Revisado: 08-21-24
All We Buried by Elena Taylor is everything you want in a cozy murder mystery...and more. Not only was there the central focused mystery (Who's the wrapped dead girl floating in the lake?), but numerous other mysteries become evident with each turned page. Step into Bet River's shoes and try to figure out all of them alongside Bet. And I realize most mystery novels have secondary mysteries and more. Still, this one was chock full of them, making your mind work overtime to see which mysteries related to the mysterious woman and which ones went to solve other secrets about the town. This one was a tough case to crack.
I rather enjoyed my time in Collier, a town that at a glance seems perfect in every way, but it has its deep dark secrets--as deep and dark as the lake where the wrapped girl is found. You get to know Bet and the ghosts from her past (and the town's past) as you ride with her and her dog, Schweitzer. The different town's characters are full of mysteries as well. High praise to Elena for her excellent writing and gift to spin a mystery. All We Buried is a satisfying page-turner that left me hoping for a second book soon.
If you can't get and read the book, download it and listen to it on Audible. A standing ovation shout out to Teri Schnaubelt-All We Buried's perfect narrator and voice. Bravo!

Nostalgic Tale
Revisado: 09-11-23
What's not to like about John Durgin's The Cursed Among Us? It casts a spell on you by throwing you back into that nostalgic world of the 90s. It's such a great time to lock a book's setting. His fast-paced prose moves the story along. The four main characters are all different. The challenges they face and experience throughout the story are all unique to each one. You also have a vicious antagonist who is out for revenge on the whole town. No one is safe. It even has that coveted and surprise twist ending that comes out of nowhere and makes the story work even better. And I have to say this: The kill scenes in this one were grizzly. One had an element in it that I had never before read; this is the first time anyone has written it as John did (that I know of). But you made me cringe, Mr. Durgin; it is the one thing I'll never forget about that book. What you did was original, and my hat is off to you. Oh, and if anyone is wondering about that element I speak of in this review, well, you will have to read The Cursed Among Us to find out for yourself.

Eddie Sutherland is dead. Normally, Detective Wes O'Brien wouldn't care about another dead drug dealer, but he may just be the man who killed him. Thrown off the force and under investigation, Wes is called upon privately to look into a cheating spouse case.

A gritty, savage pageturner
Revisado: 05-02-23
If you're not reading/listening to D.A. Schneider, you need to change that immediately. Irish Black was a gritty and savage page-turner. It’s a violent, hard-case crime novel. This book is also part buddy cop with plenty of laughs and part political thriller, although it is not heavy-laden with political jargon. You feel the grime of the city, the atmosphere of the dive bars, the hurt of the broken characters within the story (and there is plenty of hurt individuals both mentally and whoever is on the other end of O’Brien’s fists). Detective Wes O’Brien (nicknamed Irish Black) and his sidekick partner, Jackson Posey, go up against plenty of ruthless dirty cops, assassins, the mafia, and low-life street thugs, all of who are gunning for them. You can’t keep a good cop down; O’Brien and Posey rise to the occasion in this action-packed novel. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Get this book. Schneider writes a damn good and intense story. Five hollow-point bullets from me on this one.
