Historia
It's been 10 years since the Battlemage War, where thousands died as mages sundered the earth and split the sky. Habreel believes eradicating magic is the only way to ensure a lasting peace. He will do anything to achieve his goal, even if it means murdering every child born with the ability. As deaths involving magic increase and the seat of magical learning - the Red Tower - falls under suspicion, two students and one lawbringer must do everything they can to combat Habreel and his followers before magic disappears from the world for good.

Lots of setup but not a lot of resolution. I like the world that he’s created but found myself getting bored at the end of the book. Needed better pacing/editing.

Decent Start to a series
Revisado: 06-14-17
What made the experience of listening to The Wolf of the North, Book 1 the most enjoyable?
Liked the premise/characters.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Wolf of the North, Book 1?
I liked the description of the 'trek' they take. Seemed interesting and meorable.
What three words best describe Simon Vance’s performance?
Not. Enough. Emotion
There's points where the character is literally raging mad and Simon Vance could have been reading poetry, for all the emotion he put into the words. He does a great job distinguishing voices, but I wasn't impressed with the way he conveys the characters emotions.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme moments
Any additional comments?
the main character is a bit of a Mary-Sue - a lot of things happen to him but the character doesn't seem to either change or do anything wrong.

Historia
Our universe is ruled by physics, and faster-than-light travel is not possible - until the discovery of The Flow, an extradimensional field we can access at certain points in space-time that transports us to other worlds, around other stars. Humanity flows away from Earth, into space, and in time forgets our home world and creates a new empire, the Interdependency, whose ethos requires that no one human outpost can survive without the others. It's a hedge against interstellar war - and a system of control for the rulers of the empire.

Good Plot, shallow characters
Revisado: 04-21-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I liked the plot of the book itself, but really it felt kind of shallow and I didn't find myself truly caring about any of the characters - maybe because we spent so little time on them? I'm not sure. I've liked other Scalzi material so not quite as sure what's missing in this one.
Which character – as performed by Wil Wheaton – was your favorite?
Wil Wheaton did a great job, as always.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
As a movie, yes.
Any additional comments?
This is like a movie - if you just want something entertaining and not too deep, then this is for you.

Richard, a cadet at the Intergalactic Wizard Scout Academy, is on assignment to retrieve a defecting scientist on a planet deep behind enemy lines. In theory, it should be a simple in-and-out mission. But as Richard learned long ago, nothing is ever simple. With a deadly Crosioian scout hot on his trail, Richard soon finds himself stuck with a couple of super-genius children who may hold a secret that could mean the salvation or destruction of three galaxies.

Too much talking
Revisado: 08-07-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I remember from high school the 'show, don't tell'. This is a bunch of 'telling' vs showing. Everything has to be explained, every character has to have exposition. Really slowed the story down and made it not as enjoyable.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Less 'talking', more doing in the story.

Know thyself. Its always good to know who you are, but sometimes that's a little difficult. Kenhodan has no last name because he has no past...or not one he remembers, anyway. What he does have are a lot of scars and a lot of skills - some exhilarating and some terrifying - and a purpose. Now, if he only knew where he'd gotten them and what their purpose was....

Great performance for a really slow book
Revisado: 08-23-15
What would have made The Sword of the South better?
Book needed a good editor. The author seemed to want to have characters explain everything and detail every single step of the story. I don't need to have characters explain about how the hills are slippery
What could David Weber have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Shorter and faster
Which character – as performed by Nick Sullivan – was your favorite?
Liked wencits
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Sword of the South?
A lot of the travel could gave been cut to just the point where action or dialogue took place. Also dialogue of constantly explaining every little thing.

maybe you read the other books?
Revisado: 01-07-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
This book was slow, and not very action packed. I'm not sure if it was the writing, the audible portion, or a combination of both. Needs better pacing.
What could Jack Campbell have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
More action. less agonizing over forms of government. Make it more friendly to new readers to your universe.
Would you be willing to try another one of Marc Vietor’s performances?
I think Marc could have done a better job at conveying differences between characters, and expressing emotions. I never felt like if a character was angry, sad, etc that it was reflected in his voice.

Good continuation - but in need of an editor
Revisado: 09-09-14
Would you try another book from Brent Weeks and/or Simon Vance?
I would try another book from Brent Weeks - but for some reason (maybe too much Games of Thrones envy) this book seemed like it had too much stuff in it (including useless POVs), and the plot went at a glacial pace. I felt like where we were at the end of the book could have been achieved somewhere in the middle.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Ending was good - a couple of reveals I didn't see coming after one fairly obvious one.
What about Simon Vance’s performance did you like?
Simon Vance did a great job as always
Do you think The Broken Eye needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes. It needs a follow-up book to finish up the plot points - but it needs to go back to the pace of the first 2 books.
