Historia
The Teapot Dome scandal of the early 1920s was all about oil - hundreds of millions of dollars worth of petroleum. When the scandal finally broke, the consequences were tremendous. President Harding's legacy was forever tarnished, while Oil Cabinet member Albert Fall was forced to resign and was imprisoned for a year. Others implicated in the affair suffered prison terms, commitment to mental hospitals, suicide, and even murder.

This book is well researched and tells a gripping story of corruption. The oil barons of yesteryear unsurprisingly engaged in the same shenanigans as big industry today.

Historia
Between 1910 and 1920, vigilantes and law enforcement-including the renowned Texas Rangers - killed Mexican residents with impunity. The full extent of the violence was known only to the relatives of the victims. The Injustice Never Leaves You offers an invaluable account of why these incidents happened, what they meant at the time, and how a determined community ensured that the victims were not forgotten.

A valuable history
Revisado: 01-28-22
This book about crimes committed by the Texas Rangers in the early 20th century is an important contribution to Texas history. The author makes great use of oral histories and personal collections adding to the scant documentation preserved in archives. At times I found the story too polemic. The material spoke for itself and did not need further prodding. Readers not as much in agreement with the need to recount this terrible history as I would likely be turned off as a result. I particularly liked the last part of the book that linked the history to today. With respect to sources I did not hear Harris and Sandler's book on the Texas Rangers and the Mexican Revolution quoted. I only listened to the book and this important work may have been referenced in the print version. I also noticed some important omissions, such as a clear identification of who was behind the Plan de San Diego, and some inaccuracies, for example what the Neutrality Laws mandated. Overall, however, a great history that challenges the listener and captures full attention throughout.

Historia
On the morning of June 1, 1921, a white mob numbering in the thousands marched across the railroad tracks dividing black from white in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and obliterated a black community then celebrated as one of America's most prosperous. The Burning will recreate the town of Greenwood at the height of its prosperity, explore the currents of hatred, racism, and mistrust between its black residents and neighboring Tulsa's white population, narrate events leading up to and including Greenwood's annihilation, and document the subsequent silence that surrounded the tragedy.

Wow! A tragic, heart wrenching story, brilliantly told, meticulously researched. History at its best! As a German without any history or understanding of the African-American experience I am in shock and awe!

Historia
In the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump, Congressman Adam Schiff had already been sounding the alarm over the resurgence of autocracy around the world, and the threat this posed to the United States. But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

Lies have short legs
Revisado: 11-22-21
My mother used to tell me when I told a lie and she caught it: Lies have short legs (translated from German). meaning that lies will not stand the test of time. Truth comes out most of the time, eventually. Jonathon Karl has helped the uncovering of lies and the liars who told them (not just the president). Willful, concocted untruths that have very short legs, especially with an expert investigative journalist shining right through them. Reading about the circumstances surrounding January 6 makes me wonder, who objectively could look at this president and his party and remain sympathetic.

Historia
It is a simple fact that no president in American history brought less foreign policy experience to the White House than Donald J. Trump. The real estate developer from Queens promised to bring his brash, zero-sum swagger to bear to cut through America's most complex national security issues, and he did. If the cost of his "America First" agenda was bulldozing the edifice of foreign alliances that had been carefully tended by every president from Truman to Obama, then so be it.

Not much new
Revisado: 08-26-20
As the title implies this was about the role of the military in the Trump administration. I respect Peter Bergen especially because of his deep insights and sources. This book had almost nothing new to offer. Most information in the book is readily available in the mainstream press. For the lack of wow factor, the book tried to make up with longwindedness. All in all a disappointing read.

This book tells a great story of a man who grew from a negotiator to the main force for finding peaceful outcomes in desperate situations. Gary Noesner grew even after this book into someone who was willing to call out the disastrous death of so many children near Waco, Texas. Compelling story, gripping tale!

Revolution or Return to Status Quo?
Revisado: 03-20-20
This book is very well researched and offers a new perspective on the Mexican Revolution. Many Mexicans 100 years after the bloody Civil War are struggling with the question of whether the Revolution fundamentally changed life in Mexico. Dr. Buchenau says, it depends. In a detailed analysis not only of Obregon but also his fellow Sonorans the question of which direction they took the revolution looms large. Obregon became a strongman, a caudillo in the tradition of Santa Anna 100 years before. The book is a great read and the conclusion I leave up to the reader to enjoy.

Wasted Intelligence
Revisado: 03-02-19
Michael Hayden provides a compelling story of what intelligence is supposed to achieve. He laments how ill-informed many Trump decisions are. Trump refuses to listen, because he does not read, is transactional, non-reflective, and suspicions.
