Historia
If Pat Garrett didn't kill Billy the Kid on that night long ago in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, then obviously the Kid lived on to be someone else, no doubt under another alias. Indeed, it would have been extremely likely that he would have adopted another name to live his new life under, since he had shown such a propensity for adopting aliases for most of his life. In June of 1949, enter William Henry "Brushy Bill' Roberts - who claimed to be Billy the kid. Probate investigator William V. Morrison agreed to interview Brushy Bill.

Fiction with no regard for history
Revisado: 06-07-22
This is a trashy romance rag. Maybe it was my fault for thinking it wouldn't be trashy and would at least be somewhat historically accurate. don't make the same mistake I did and waste your money if you're looking for something other than a trashy romance novel very loosely based on disputed history.

Historia
Was Billy the Kid really shot to death by Sheriff Pat Garrett on a July night in 1881? At the midpoint of the last century, an old man comes forth seeking a pardon for crimes committed. He says that he wants to die a free man - and that he is Billy the Kid. The incident leads to this examination of new facts, new interpretations, and new contradictions. It is the story of "Brushy" Bill Roberts, a man who laid claim to a legend. Originally published in 1955 by University of New Mexico Press.

compelling and to the point
Revisado: 04-04-22
This is a compelling collection of evidence that Brushy Bill Roberts was in fact William H Bonney AKA Billy The Kid. The affidavits from those who knew Billy The Kid was the best evidence, along with a memory of things not well known.
Brushy Bill Roberts was either Billy The Kid or someone who rode with him and was present at many important and mundane times during his life.
Whether you believe Brushy Bill was Billy The Kid or not, this is a worthwhile listen.

Historia
Tobacco was first cultivated and enjoyed by the indigenous inhabitants of the Americas, who used it for medicinal, religious, and social purposes long before the arrival of Columbus. But when Europeans began to colonize the American continents, it became something else entirely - a cultural touchstone of pleasure and success and a coveted commodity that would transform the world economy forever.

This is a great social history of Tobacco that takes you all the way through the current near prohibition in the west. The narration is done well. It's worth the time to listen.

Historia
Linguists have been studying Black English as a speech variety for years, arguing to the public that it is different from Standard English, not a degradation of it. Yet false assumptions and controversies still swirl around what it means to speak and sound "Black." In his first book devoted solely to the form, structure, and development of Black English, John McWhorter clearly explains its fundamentals and rich history while carefully examining the cultural, educational, and political issues that have undermined recognition of this transformative, empowering dialect.

Any lover of language should learn from this book
Revisado: 07-20-20
Any lover of language can learn from this book. The fact that black English as a legitimate dialect is the main theme doesn't do the reach of this work justice. The English language as a whole is illuminated as a way to contrast and compare the dialect if black English. No adjacent topic is avoided and this book is as concise as it is informative. I have, and will continue to, enthusiastically share this with friends. I am confident this work is not too far over anyone's head or certainly not beneath anyone's level of comprehension for them to leave much better informed about the English language, the Black dialect, and the relationship between the two.

Historia
The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Well written and read. More Twain than Thoreau
Revisado: 04-07-20
Educational, entertaining, and interesting.
Pros-
Story: funny, realistic, and informative.
Performance: the reading elevated the story beyond it's mere words.
Cons-
Story: Long preachy tangents about the failures of conservation, even to the point of missing the dangers overpopulation of Moose to people and the environment.

Fleeing a disastrous marriage, Helen Huntingdon retreats to the desolate mansion, Wildfell Hall, with her son, Arthur. There, she makes her living as a painter. Finding it difficult to avoid her neighbors, she is soon an object of speculation and gossip. Brontë portrays Helen's eloquent struggle for independence at a time when society defined a married woman as her husband's property.

Excellently performed Greatest of fiction novels!
Revisado: 03-08-20
The Tennant of Wildfell Hall has long been my favorite fiction novel and this audio version is my favorite version of the kind.
This is a story that should be read by every young adult before marriage, as it shows the presumptuous folly of a woman having men as close friends without any romantic sentiment or notions developing.
One of the best themes is the consequences of decisions made in one's youth and the effects it can have on many others.
The best themes though are Love, patience, and redemption.

The author of Cod and The Basque History of the World takes an extraordinary look at an ordinary substance — salt, the only rock humans eat — and how it has shaped civilization from the very beginning. Mark Kurlansky has produced a kaleidoscope of history, a multi-layered masterpiece that blends economic, scientific, political, religious, and culinary records into a rich and memorable tale.

more a recitation of recipes than anything else
Revisado: 08-23-19
I suffered through many hours of this before I couldn't take it anymore. Hours upon hours of recipes read, ingredient after boring ingredient. A few scarce minutes of history and culture in between just wasn't enough of a reward once the recipe readings once again went on for hours.
save yourself the time and don't start this, unless, of course, you love hearing old recipes read line by boring line

So much of our human body is made up of salt that we'd be dead without it. The fine balance of nature, the trade of salt as a currency of many nations and empires, the theme of a popular Shakespearean play... Salt is best selling author Mark Kurlansky's story of the only rock we eat.

Historia
Many of us know the Black Death as a catastrophic event of the medieval world. But the Black Death was arguably the most significant event in Western history, profoundly affecting every aspect of human life, from the economic and social to the political, religious, and cultural. In its wake the plague left a world that was utterly changed, forever altering the traditional structure of European societies and forcing a rethinking of every single system of Western civilization: food production and trade, the church, political institutions, law, art, and more.

A thorough yet fascinating & approachable work
Revisado: 07-17-19
Well written and well read; this is more historical & social than epidemiological. I won't ruin some of the best surprises but the black death shaped modern society in so many ways it's hard to imagine where we might be had it not happened just as it did.

Right now, Truth is under attack, and much is at stake. Christians are caught in the crossfire of alternative Christian histories, emerging faulty texts, and a cultural push to eliminate absolute Truth altogether. As a result, many churches and Christians have been deceived. Worse still, they propagate the deception that poses itself as Truth!
