The author did a good job evoking the time period, which I enjoyed. Her writing is quite good. However, the plot is thin, and character development is just ok. Overall, I’d say the book is a solid “meh.”

Waste of time and money

This book is highly overrated. The character development is weak, the plot line is as deep as a kiddie pool. It was marginally entertaining; so I wouldn’t even recommend it as a fun little diversion, which I hoped it would be. It was just kinda dumb.

Tara Westover is an amazing, strong woman. Her book is an incredible recounting of her childhood, and an ode to her success against all odds. I was rooting for her at every turn, and happy that she has found her way out of a tragic past. Bravo!!

Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

The Bell Jar, read by Maggie Gyllenhaal is an audio book at its finest. Excellent writing, a story told starkly, yet tenderly. Ms. Gyllenhaal's reading adds to the book, with her near perfect inflections and diction. She truly seems to become Esther Greenwood. Bravo!

Great book, horrible narrator

What did you love best about The Path Between the Seas?
This is a very interesting, engrossing, well written history. Absolutely fascinating.
What didn’t you like about Nelson Runger’s performance?
Besides the fact that he's too slow - and you can fix that by using the audible app at 1.25x speed - the extraneous mouth sounds he makes all the time render this book almost unlistenable. Can't the sound engineers edit that out? It's really gross, and extremely annoying.
