On January 21, 1804, Anne Sharpe arrives at Godmersham Park in Kent to take up the position of governess. At thirty-one years old, she has no previous experience of either teaching or fine country houses. Her mother has died, and she has nowhere else to go. Anne is left with no choice. Commit to the bit
Revisado: 05-10-25
While this novel makes a serviceable effort to highlight the insecurities and micro-degradations inherent in the lives of single women during the Regency era, it falls short in regard to credibility and immersiveness. There are jarring instances of decidedly modern idioms or turns of phrase that jolted me out of an otherwise enchanting historical reverie. The narrator does an excellent job.

Weird incestuous romance
Revisado: 02-27-25
I loved The Fox Wife from the same author, and was eager to read more of her work. I love how she masterfully evokes another time and place. The characters here are more stereotypes or caricatures than really fleshed out individuals. The weird incestuous attraction at the heart of the novel is just really off-putting. I honestly don't think I'll read more of her work.

Historia
Camford, 1920. Gilded and glittering, England's secret magical academy is no place for Clover, a commoner with neither connections nor magical blood. She tells herself she has fought her way there only to find a cure for her brother Matthew, one of the few survivors of a faerie attack on the battlefields of WWI which left the doors to faerie country sealed, the study of its magic banned, and its victims cursed.

If your kink is self-imposed guilt trips
Revisado: 02-08-25
Strong writing and beautiful phrasing are the good things I can say about this book. The heroine, Clover Hill, discovers the world of magic and earns a scholarship at Magic U. She meets some interesting characters and the rest of the story is Clover subjecting herself to one increasingly overwrought and completely self-imposed guilt trip after another. Ugh.

Historia
Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse, apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire - and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

Almost but just no
Revisado: 09-18-23
I thought this would be a fun, frothy, slightly steampunkish jaunt. But the characters are all flat, the plot is utterly predictable, and the characters are all caricatures. Oh, and goody goody, there are poorly written “erotic” interludes.

Historia
Achilles has fled her home and her vicious Myrmidon clan to live as a woman with the kallai, the transgender priestesses of Great Mother Aphrodite. When Odysseus comes to recruit the “prince” Achilles for a war against the Hittites, she prepares to die rather than fight as a man. However, her divine mother, Athena, intervenes, transforming her body into the woman’s body she always longed for, and promises her everything: glory, power, fame, victory in war, and, most importantly, a child born of her own body.

I wanted to love this book
Revisado: 07-17-23
I’m a fan of well written fiction that reimagines well known stories. I was fascinated with the concept of reframing Achilles as a trans woman. Some of the characters are utterly engaging. Somehow, taken all together, it just doesn’t quite work for me. It was bastante bien.
