Enjoyable dive into indigenous reservation life in Maine.

Coming of age and young adult perspectives. Having the characters in many stories helps a thread, not often in short story collections.

Historia
When two young lovers abscond from a Puritan colony, little do they know that their humble cabin in the woods will become the home of an extraordinary succession of human and nonhuman characters alike. An English soldier, destined for glory, abandons the battlefields of the New World to devote himself to growing apples. A pair of spinster twins navigate war and famine, envy and desire. A crime reporter unearths an ancient mass grave—only to discover that the earth refuse to give up their secrets.

A place woven by stories
Revisado: 02-26-24
A potentially full connection of a place as humans came through that gets lost in stories that feel to clinical at times.

Historia
Claire Keegan continues her outstanding work with this new collection of quietly wrenching stories of despair and desire in modern-day Ireland. A writer awarded a stay to work in Heinrich Böll's old cottage has her peace interrupted by an unwelcome intruder whose ulterior motives emerge as the night progresses. A priest waits at the altar to perform a marriage—and battles his memories of a love affair that led him to question all to which he has dedicated his life. And a man seeks solace at the bottom of a bottle as he mourns both his empty life and his lost love.

Wonderful stories
Revisado: 12-27-23
Enjoy the wonderful stories and excellent narration. Varied folk and relational stories. Great to listen with a family member. I look forward to reading more from this author — uses imagery, humor, and serious content to blend well-crafted narratives.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

A most perfect novel
Revisado: 10-30-21
This is a book upon books, looming large, and thematic of the human journey itself through several periods of time. It shows our peril and frivolity on this planet, touching and hopeful.
I hope not 7 years till his offering.

Historia
A mother and father set out with their two children, a boy and a girl, driving from New York to Arizona in the heat of summer. Their destination: Apacheria, the place the Apaches once called home. Why Apaches? asks the 10-year-old son. Because they were the last of something, answers his father. In their car, they play games and sing along to music. But on the radio, there is news about an "immigration crisis": thousands of kids trying to cross the Southwestern border into the US but getting detained - or lost in the desert along the way.

Historia
Featuring original music by Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon! It's 2003 and Romy Hall is at the start of two consecutive life sentences at Stanville Women's Correctional Facility, deep in California's Central Valley. Outside is the world from which she has been severed: the San Francisco of her youth and her young son, Jackson. Inside is a new reality: thousands of women hustling for the essentials needed to survive; the bluffing and pageantry and acts of violence by guards and prisoners alike; and the absurdities of institutional living, which Kushner evokes with great humor and precision.

Real Characters but Uninspired Story
Revisado: 02-27-19
The characters, words, and narrative tone are realistic to the harsh language and thinking of people in the system.
The story itself feels done before and the end offers no real surprises.
In the end, I did not feel touched by the character so the emotional impact was minimal. Better to watch Orange is the New Black.
