Historia
Over the last decade, a single innovation has massively fueled digital black markets: cryptocurrency. Crime lords inhabiting lawless corners of the internet have operated more freely—whether in drug dealing, money laundering, or human trafficking—than their analog counterparts could have ever dreamed of. By transacting not in dollars or pounds but in currencies with anonymous ledgers, overseen by no government, beholden to no bankers, these black marketeers have sought to rob law enforcement of their chief method of cracking down on illicit finance: following the money.

Historia
With books like Serial Killers, Female Serial Killers and Sons of Cain, Peter Vronsky has established himself as the foremost expert on the history of serial killers. In this first definitive history of the "Golden Age" of American serial murder, when the number and body count of serial killers exploded, Vronsky tells the stories of the most unusual and prominent serial killings from the 1950s to the early 21st century. From Ted Bundy to the Golden State Killer, our fascination with these classic serial killers seems to grow by the day.

Deep Dive into Serial Killers
Revisado: 08-23-24
If you have just wandered into the dark alleys of true crime, this book may not be for you. It very graphically describes the violent acts of serial killers.
I am no stranger to true crime, and I found this book to be generally interesting, but tedious. It tended to be repetitive, right down to whole phrases and sentences. It read more like someone’s PhD thesis.

Historia
For centuries, works of art have been stolen in countless ways from all over the world, but no one has been quite as successful at it as the master thief Stéphane Breitwieser. Carrying out more than two hundred heists over nearly eight years—in museums and cathedrals all over Europe—Breitwieser, along with his girlfriend who worked as his lookout, stole more than three hundred objects, until it all fell apart in spectacular fashion.

An unusual art thief
Revisado: 07-19-24
An interesting book about a man who steals art because he doesn’t think anyone else understands the beauty of it except him.
While his theft was a crime, the real crime was committed by his mother for destroying so much art to hide her son’s crimes. I was enraged she didn’t get punished more.
The reader is outstanding. Had such a nice voice that I kept falling asleep and having to run the book back. lol

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Well-researched, fascinating true crime
Revisado: 07-02-24
A fascinating dive into the dark web. One of my takeaways from this was how much faster DPR would have been caught if all the law enforcement agencies could have just played nice and shared information with each other. Also, not surprised that corrupt agents put their hands in the cookie jar and thankfully are also caught.
I amazed out how well-researched this book was, and I liked how at the end the author was explained where they got all their information.
Fantastic reader

Historia
When celebrity chef Mario Batali sent out an apology letter for the sexual harassment allegations made against him, he had the gall to include a recipe—for cinnamon rolls, of all things. Geraldine DeRuiter decided to make the recipe, and she happened to make food journalism history along with it. Her subsequent essay, with its scathing commentary about the pervasiveness of misogyny in the food world, would be read millions of times. In If You Can’t Take the Heat, DeRuiter shares stories about her shockingly true, painfully funny (and sometimes just painful) adventures in gastronomy.

Kind of tedious
Revisado: 03-26-24
I really wanted to like this book.
I follow the author on social media and have read her blog. I pre-ordered and was very excited. But listening to her go on and on for this many hours grew quite tiresome.
Around Chapter 11 I realized that I didn’t want to listen to her anymore, nor did I care about anything she was sharing. I was determined to finish it. But every time I started listening, it became a chore. Her voice didn’t start out sounding whiney to me, but by the end, I couldn’t stand hearing her anymore. There’s very few authors who I could listen to reading their own work until the end of time (Neil Gaiman comes to mind; his voice is like silk), and so when an author reads their own book, I hesitate (not everyone sounds like Neil Gaiman, after all). Her reading her own book was a bad idea.
I generally enjoy reading her writing, but all of this at once, it made it clear to me that she’s a mediocre writer. I hate having to say that, but this book was just ok. I really wanted to like this, but I couldn’t.

Historia
Millions of people–looking to cheat on their partners–signed up for Ashley Madison in the early 2000s, seeking a private space to share their public desires. The promise of discretion was shattered in the summer of 2015, when anonymous hackers stole the company’s cache of user information and published it worldwide. The result? One of the most shocking data breaches of the internet age. Overnight, millions of unfaithful spouses had their real names, addresses and sexual preferences published online in a searchable database that anyone could browse.

Ashley Madison hack
Revisado: 03-12-24
This was an interesting overview of the Ashley Madison hack and infidelity. I generally liked it, but the woman who narrated sounded like she was 16 years old and it was super distracting and weird. Her delivery was poor and it gave the vibe of someone presenting a high school research project. Best part of this was the tech journalist they consulted.

Interesting Biography of an Infamous Killer
Revisado: 03-11-24
This was a surprisingly good book. I expected the typical true crime over-focus on forensics and minutiae of the criminal acts, but it turned out to be more of an examination of Ed Gein’s life and how his crimes affected the town he lived in. Very well-written and researched.

Interesting until the last hour
Revisado: 10-26-23
This was a mostly interesting story that was made better by the performance. Without the good reader, this could have been agonizingly dull.
Definitely lost me in the last hour when he starts going on about his conversion to Christianity. The last 20 minutes were eyeroll inducing proselytizing so I marked it as finished and didn’t even listen.
