Historia
On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend. One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. Known locally as the Dark Place, the dense forest is the writer’s favorite place for long walks and it’s on one such walk that she stumbles upon a mysterious note that simply reads, “DIG HERE.”

Slow compared to NOTIT and TSWG
Revisado: 01-16-25
I often find that LJ books are the slow burn of the thriller genre. They take *forever* to get to any kind of action… and then all of a sudden it comes in hot and heavy and is a huge mic drop. This one didn’t deliver. The slow burn fizzled out rather than exploding and it was underwhelming. Not a bad idea of a story…. But I frequently found myself bored.

A Gripping and Heart-Wrenching Story
Revisado: 01-09-25
Lisa Jewell’s Then She Was Gone delivers a harrowing and sorrowful tale that lingers with you long after it’s over. The story is both unique and captivating, with deeply developed characters that feel all too real, making it nearly impossible to put down. However, the narration detracted from the experience at times—the voices felt odd or mismatched, and the tone was occasionally too bland for the emotional weight of the story. Despite this, the raw emotional depth and well-crafted plot make it a compelling listen, even if it’s a tough one to get through at points because it truly tugs at your heart.

Deeply disturbing and hard to stomach on occasion- a captivating listen!
Revisado: 01-07-25
This book touched on topics that are really hard to listen to but the author did it well. She developed the characters fully and really provided a story that was equally hard to hear and hard to step away from. Absolutely recommend.

Historia
Perla Wultz lives with her husband, Grant, and their precious daughter, Sophie, in a gated Pasadena community. Affluent, sociable, and accomplished, Perla plays the part of loving wife and mother to perfection. It seems an ideal life, if not for a decades-old crime that has become Perla’s dark and consuming secret obsession. Twenty-three years ago, Leewood Folcrum confessed to murdering two young girls during a birthday party. Though he’s been condemned to a life sentence, his crime is not forgotten.

An exceptional thriller!
Revisado: 01-04-25
The Last Party by A.R. Torre is a gripping thriller—I couldn’t put it down. The suspense is top-notch, and the way Torre keeps you guessing with every twist and turn is so well done. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, the story took another sharp turn, and I was back to square one. And that big “aha” moment when everything finally clicked? So satisfying.
Torre’s writing really shines here; the pacing, the layered characters, and the clever plotting all come together perfectly. It’s one of those thrillers where the payoff is totally worth the build-up. I loved this book and would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a smart, genuinely surprising read.

Fascinating story, abrupt ending. Don’t use this to judge Torre’s other books.
Revisado: 01-04-25
I enjoyed this book, though I feel it was harder to keep track of in the first 2/3 compared to Torre’s other books… followed by a rather abrupt ending. It feels like there should be a second, follow up book… or that everything should have been more deeply developed. It was entertaining, and I really enjoyed that it was a unique take amongst a sea of thrillers that all seem to be the same story retold with different characters these days… but it was a little bit one dimensional. I’d have loved to see this one book developed much deeper and split into 3 books. I’d definitely read it again for entertainment value. But I mourn the loss of the series this could have easily been.

Historia
Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore is an expert on killers. She’s spent a decade treating California’s most depraved predators and unlocking their motives - predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. The case against Thompson as the Bloody Heart Killer is damning - and closed, as far as Gwen and the media are concerned. If not for one new development.

Marlow needs to believe she's crazy. The alternative would mean embracing the gift—or curse—shared by her mother and grandmother: she can see angels and demons, including a dark and haunting entity who's been with Marlow her entire life. At least, she believes that's all he is until a fae from the Nordic pantheon strolls into her life and informs her that she's been sharing a bed with the Prince of Hell.

Easy to follow, easy to listen to, and a great book to enjoy while crocheting!
Revisado: 12-26-24
The characters are interesting and fun to follow, not overly complex but not flat either. It took me a minute to follow what was happening in the beginning but that’s not unusual for me- I mention it just to say don’t give up if you feel the same. It became extremely clear after the first few chapters and also makes sense why it was a little vague in the beginning (it helps the reader feel what the main character was also feeling- a bit of confusion, disconnect from the world, mistrust in her own brain’s comprehension skills.)

This was gripping and interesting- finally a unique story! While this may carry the YA genre in its tags, it’s absolutely suitable for adults. It’s well written, engaging, and there are PLENTY of plot twists to go around. 10/10!
