Historia
It was easy for Elizabeth. She married the man she loved, bore him two children and made a home for him which was the envy of their friends. It was harder for Ruth. She married Elizabeth’s son and then found that, somehow, she could never quite measure up. Isolation, deceit and betrayal fill the gaps between the two individual women and between their different worlds. In this complex thriller, Philippa Gregory deploys all her insight into what women want and what women fear, as Ruth confronts the shifting borders of her own sanity.

What a perfectly written story of betrayal, selfishness and the forced slide into mental illness.

Historia
To the exotic Aminpour sisters, Ireland looks like a much-needed safe haven. It has been seven years since Marjan Aminpour fled Iran with her younger sisters, Bahar and Layla, and she hopes that in Ballinacroagh they might finally find a home. The sisters set about creating a Persian oasis and soon sensuous wafts of cardamom, cinnamon, and saffron float through the streets-an exotic aroma that announces the opening of the Babylon Cafe. And it is an affront to the senses of Ballinacroagh's uncrowned king, Thomas McGuire.

Lack of Irish accent
Revisado: 01-10-24
I read this book years ago and it has remained one of my favorites. Had I sampled the audiobook I wouldn’t have purchased it. No lively Irish lilts or Persian accents. It nearly ruined the book for me. The narrator was clear and concise, like a third grade teacher reading to students. No emotions. The story remains wonderful and the dishes prepared in the cafe sound magical, as I remember from the book.

What a twist!
Revisado: 10-11-23
A superb book with outstanding character development. I will listen to Ray Porter anytime, but his distinct style certainly didn’t make me think this was ever taking place in England. But an exciting listen overall!

Revisado: 09-17-23
What a ride! Such a dichotomy. I’m a baby boomer so I think I understand where that fine grey line is a real thing. I don’t want to know how much truth is here but I’m unplugging my smart TV and Alexa 😳

I hope there are more books with these characters!
Revisado: 07-10-23
All the characters were really well drawn, for me at least. The narrator was perfect as well. She wasn't really a character narrator, but rather reading the story to me and I thoroughly enjoyed her method. The story continued to unfold and even though it was dark in many parts, there was plenty of counterbalance with love and support of her family and friends. I highly recommend this book!
