Funny with a good mix of serious
Revisado: 01-05-24
Likable characters and enough surprising twists and turns, to spice up the gratuitous helping of genre-specific tropes. Fun story and imaginative. I immediately bought this one after the first book in the series, and am in my way to get whatever is next in line. I recommend.

Short, but Not Shallow
Revisado: 08-08-20
I enjoyed this one so much, I'm going to listen to it again right away.
I was expecting a simple little tale to entertain me for an hour. It turned out to be a truly great story with surprising depth.
I was fully engaged from beginning to end.
The narrator's performance was truly fantastic - like homemade buttercream frosting on this literary Cupcake.

Clinging to its skin are the zones, a series of semi-autonomous city-states, each of which enjoys a different---and rigidly enforced---level of technology. Following an infiltration mission that went tragically wrong, Quillon has been living incognito, working as a pathologist in the district morgue.

I keep getting Alastair Reynolds books because I know that even though they take a while to get into, you eventually get sucked in and dragged along for a thrilling adventure.
Somehow the the man reading this does all these different voices and characters, quite convincingly.

The best part is simply hearing someone speak the words I could never quite find for myself. There is so much value in receiving affirmation, especially in this context!
I often felt as if I could jump and cheer,
"YES! THAT'S IT! That's exactly how it feels!"
I still like to listen to this again every few months or so.
I always pick up something new while reminded of some great Truths I've managed to forget.
Nothing too harsh
or too heavy.
No condescension.
No coddling.
She expertly balances blunt truth with gentle guidance.
No complex psycho-babble.
(the kind that helps their expertiste-ego
more than it helps my progress)
Her "tips" are uncommonly gentle, simplified & manageable.
Not impossibly idealistic.
Not patheticly over-indulging.
Small phrases, Simple words, repeated frequently enough to naturally be memorized without "trying" !!!
No post-it notes all around your house.
No notecards to tote around.
She's also a great narrator - I found her mild accent to be quite endearing. Overall, it feels like a very comfortable conversation with a wise & compassionate advocate.
Now then:
* STOP STRUGGLING *
.... to listen to (read) more lengthy reviews, like mine
* ACCEPT *
.... your excellent decision to listen to (or read) this book!
♡ Thank You ♡
