Historia
Every 100 years, the island of Lightlark appears to host the Centennial, a deadly game that only the rulers of six realms are invited to play. The Centennial offers the six rulers one final chance to break the curses that have plagued their realms for centuries. Isla Crown is the young ruler of Wildling—a realm of temptresses cursed to kill anyone they fall in love with. They are feared and despised, and are counting on Isla to end their suffering by succeeding at the Centennial. To survive, Isla must lie, cheat, and betray...even as love complicates everything.

Irritating
Revisado: 06-07-24
There were so many plot holes and things that made absolutely no sense. The author seemed to think that’s what a plot twist is. But, no. It’s just irritating.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

No need to have read David Copperfield first in order to thoroughly enjoy this book
Revisado: 11-15-23
I have never read David Copperfield, which I worried would impair reading this book. It absolutely did not. It’s hard to describe or even understand how this book, which deals with so much trauma, could be so joyful to read. You will not regret giving it a listen. The narrator is perfect for the role, too

Historia
Finding seeds of inspiration in the Brothers Grimm, seventeenth-century French lore, and Scottish ballads, Kelly Link spins classic fairy tales into utterly original stories of seekers—characters on the hunt for love, connection, revenge, or their own sense of purpose. Twisting and winding in astonishing ways, expertly blending realism and the speculative, witty, empathetic, and never predictable—these stories remind us once again of why Kelly Link is incomparable in the art of short fiction.

Thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking. I had to really analyze each story, but somehow that didn’t take away the fun. The chosen narrators were perfect for their stories

Made me rage and cheer! Moxie girls fight back!
Revisado: 02-16-21
Not going to lie, I expected this book to be a little irritating. “Moxie” seems so old fashioned. But I loved everything about it. The characters were multidimensional. The indignities the girls suffered felt real. The voice acting was perfect. Read it. Read it with your teenage kids of any gender. You’ll be glad you did.

Like a Canticle for Leibowitz meets a Handmaid’s Tale. It wasn’t comfortable. It will not be to everyone’s taste. But it was fascinating! I burned right through it. I couldn’t put it down.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

An important story told well
Revisado: 10-17-17
Beautifully written and beautifully acted. Star's story is at once dramatic and yet accessible. She's every high schooler. Yet, the issues she faces are foreign to so many of us. The nuances of this book make it one of the best books I've read in years.

There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

What if you aren't the Chosen One? The one who's supposed to fight the zombies or the soul-eating ghosts or whatever the heck this new thing is with the blue lights and the death? What if you're like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.

My teenage son told me I had to read this book. I'm so glad I listened.
Revisado: 12-14-15
Full disclosure: I love shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and iZombie. I love comic books. But, I don't think you have to be a fan of the genre to appreciate this book. Mike is just an average guy. He has his friends and he has his problems. Even in a high school populated by "the chosen ones," Mike and his friends are special - because the truly love one another. Sometimes courage just means you're strong enough to live your life and help others live theirs.
This book was beautifully written. Heartfelt and funny. Extremely well narrated, too. The narrator had subtly distinct voices for the characters, and (blessedly) did not try to pitch his voice to read the female parts. I hate that. Instead he made his own voice a bit softer and smoother. It gave an impression of femininity without being weird.

Historia
Kim Miller is an immaculately put-together woman with a great career, a loving boyfriend, and a tidy apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. You would never guess that Kim grew up behind the closed doors of her family’s idyllic Long Island house, navigating between teetering stacks of aging newspapers, broken computers, and boxes upon boxes of unused junk festering in every room - the product of her father’s painful and unending struggle with hoarding. In this moving coming-of-age story, Kim brings to life her rat-infested home and her childhood consumed by concealing her father’s shameful secret from friends.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The author tells her tale in a very matter of fact way that is both informative and compelling. Her narration feels very intimate. But, the vocal fry in her voice can be annoying.
