Historia
A house embedded with an artificial intelligence is a common thing: a house that is an artificial intelligence, infused with a thinking creature that is not human? That is something else. But now Deniau's been dead a year, and Rose House is locked up tight, as commanded by the architect's will: all his possessions and files and sketches are confined in its archives, and their only keeper is Rose House itself. Rose House, and one other.

Very disappointing novella
Revisado: 03-13-24
The story simply has too little to it. Although it contains elements of an homage to noir or hard boiled detective mysteries, this doesn’t excuse the lack of clear motivations or character growth. The extremely short list of characters totally undercuts the mystery of the perpetrator’s identity, and in general this book wouldn’t merit any attention at all were it not for the author’s other books and reputation. I look forward to Martinez’s next effort and hope it is more of a return to form.

Historia
Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place. Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan. Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie. But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits.

Not his best
Revisado: 09-29-23
I love and admire Scalzi’s work, but this is comparatively weak. Is fun, and moves are an enjoyable clip, but it’s a very shallow heist story that ultimately comes across as a kind of more childish version of Wanted. It rather blandly ignores the fact that a protagonist with no background in murder is somehow immediately on board with slaughter.

Historia
Meet Otto and Cecil. Two brothers who grew up privileged in the Welsh countryside. They enjoyed watching nature shows, playing with their pet pony, impersonating their Grandfather…and killing the help. Murder is the family business after all. Downton Abbey, this is not. However, it’s not so easy to continue the family legacy with the constant stream of threats and distractions seemingly leaping from the hedgerow.

A frustrating entry
Revisado: 09-13-23
I’m a lifelong fan but this book makes me miss the Diary era. Here it feels like the author is trying too hard to ape Burroughs, and had too few ideas for the story. His narrator remains a cypher, alluding to his most famous anonymous Narrator, but with no satisfying explanation of his lack of character. The true omnipresence of incest and revelry in literal feces simply wears on one’s patience.

Historia
Cal Sounder is a detective working for the police on certain very sensitive cases. So when he’s called in to investigate a homicide at a local apartment, he’s surprised by the routineness of it all. But when he arrives on scene, Cal soon learns that the victim—Roddy Tebbit, an otherwise milquetoast techie—is well over seven feet tall. And although he doesn’t look a day over thirty, he is ninety-one years old. Tebbit is a Titan—one of this dystopian, near-future society’s genetically altered elites. And this case is definitely Cal’s thing.

A gripping sci fi noir
Revisado: 05-30-23
Although there is nothing truly innovative here, and the metaphor made flesh of the Titans is a bit on the nose, it’s great fun. Noir is an intrinsically exaggerated style, and it works perfectly here to telling a well paced and entertaining story. I’m not sure if there’s room for a sequel, but it’s a reminder of how sometimes good work can just be good, without needing to be groundbreaking.

A substantial improvement
Revisado: 04-02-23
I’ve greatly enjoyed both books in this series, but this sequel improves on the characterization and pacing. My only complaint is that the ending is coming dangerously close to a buffy-style bit of team building, but I’m looking forward to the next entry.

Historia
Sancia, Clef, and Berenice have gone up against long odds in the past. But the war they’re fighting now is one even they can’t win. This time, they’re not facing robber-baron elites or even an immortal hierophant, but an entity whose intelligence is spread over half the globe—one that uses the magic of scriving to control not just objects but human minds. To fight it, they’ve used scriving technology to transform themselves and their allies into an army—a society—unlike anything humanity has seen before.

Doesn’t stick the landing
Revisado: 03-02-23
Due to power creep, the story has moved radically from its original idea of human dynamics to instead become a cyberpunk manifesto of sorts. It’s less about any of the characters and more about how they all need to erase their individuality to become a homogenous uniformity. By making impossible tasks from previous chapters and books trivial, all sense of boundaries and rules go out the window. As a result, the finale seems entirely unearned.

Historia
Over the last decade, a single innovation has massively fueled digital black markets: cryptocurrency. Crime lords inhabiting lawless corners of the internet have operated more freely—whether in drug dealing, money laundering, or human trafficking—than their analog counterparts could have ever dreamed of. By transacting not in dollars or pounds but in currencies with anonymous ledgers, overseen by no government, beholden to no bankers, these black marketeers have sought to rob law enforcement of their chief method of cracking down on illicit finance: following the money.

Solid but repetitive
Revisado: 07-21-22
The research and construction is great, but I find that in the attempt to move back and forth in the timeline to tell the various stories of the empire, the author too often repeated elements, not trusting the reader to remember. Still, worth l listening to.
