butchered beyond comprehension

Pass this one by. I read the book a few years ago and thought it was great but this is a 2 hour hatchet job radio play. There are too many voices that come and go with no identification and the whole production is incomprehensible. Whoever did this should have listened to some old radio shows to see how it should be done. But the most annoying aspect of this production is the constant rise and fall in the audio level. If you turn up the volume to be able to hear the many whispered conversations then the normal tones that jump in are deafing. Read the book and forget about this botched attempt at dramatization.

These 3 Dark Materials books are not just audio books -- they are audio plays with music and actors and the kind of full production values like an old radio play. The stories are very very very dark and very very very serious and very long but they are also rich in character and dense plots with lots of action. You'll never hear anything better than these. They are marketed as kids books but they are not easy or simple books. They make Harry Potter look like Mother Goose. They deal with the soul and god and religion and moving between worlds in search of demons and "dust" and angels. The Armored Bear on the cover is one of the great fantasy characters in fantasy literature. Bravo!!

Nice Walking Tour of London

I did the fist walking tour which starts at Embankment Tube Station near Trafalgar Square on the Thames and goes around the Strand and up through Covent Garden and I found it fascinating. Tons of little things I would never had noticed along with lots of history and hidden alleys to duck into and such. A lovely hour and half stoll. I walk fast so it could take you a little longer. And bring your camera to take pictures. Lots to see and well worth your time.

Forget the negative reviews. I listened to this on a road trip from Boston to Buffalo and found it totally engaging and fun. I had to go hunt down a photo of the "Last Supper" so I could see for myself. I know this book has caused a lot of controversy and its obvious why when you get your little brain wrapped around the premise. I don't know about the additional info that is in the printed book but I do know that this is fun audio book to listen to. I didn't get the feeling listening to this that anything of any critical importance was omitted. It kept me alert and involved and made a 7 hour drive seem like a heartbeat.
