The story so far is decent, if a bit heavy on combat. While I have no problem with the tone and voice of the narrator, the constant mispronunciations get a bit annoying. Bade is constantly pronounced as “bad” and menzoberranzan is pronounced menzoberronzan. There are some less frequently occurring but also puzzling hiccups. Like short-lived being pronounced with the eye sound in lived.

It was alright. There were tons of plot holes and it really required you to suspend your disbelief and just go along with it. I suppose given the title that that’s a fair expectation.

Besides that, I found certain parts a bit juvenile for Stephen King being the author. At the same time, I’m not sure how appropriate this book is for younger readers. Maybe highschool level would be alright, but no younger than 14/15. It features vulgar language and a couple crude references to sex, but nothing in graphic detail.

Overall I don’t regret listening to it, but it wasn’t as good as I hoped it would be.

The narrator gave an adequate performance, even if some voices were grating at times.

The story was a 3-4 for me most of the way through. But that ending (the last 5-10 chapters) is really what got me giving this book a 5/5.
Performance by Kevin Kenerly is also great.

Singing becomes grating after a while… Bombadil is aggravating

The narrator is decent for the most part.. I haven’t read/listened to LOTR before and I was somewhat surprised to find the amount of songs that are in the book. I honestly would have just preferred theses lines be read with being “sung”. Tom Bombadil (at least as he is voiced) is extremely aggravating and I would skip over it if I ever went through this audiobook again. I think a big part of that is the variations in volume level, the song bits get much louder and I had to turn the volume down and back up on a few occasions. Tolkien’s writing is great, no complaints there.

The narrator is fine now. Not sure if they updated it, or if it is just easier to follow now that I've seen the show recently, but I am able to understand it now. I think the narrator does a fine job for most male characters (though they often sound similar), but the female character performances are not convincing.

A great guide for 5e combat with some minor flaws

This title is basically just more great examples of 5e monster/creature combat tactics and behavior from the first book “The Monsters Know What They’re Doing”. I am somewhat surprised that a different narrator was chosen for this second entry as the first narrator did a great job in my opinion. The narrator in this book (Jonathan Davis) does a serviceable job, but mispronounces a few words in unfortunate ways (e.g., Piscine is supposed to be pronounced similarly to Pisces but Jonathan pronounced it Pis-seen). Also there were a few confusing moments in terms of how the chapters are split up on audible. The chapter about Giff was followed by a chapter on combining different enemy types, but I was thrown off because audible basically included the combining enemy types as part of the giff chapter and I missed the transition mid chapter. This made it slightly hard to follow. Still need to finish the book and see if any other anomalies are present but it doesn’t detract too severely from the overall value of this audiobook to 5e DM’s and strategic players alike.

More conflicts and tension develops as our main heroes miraculously survive against impossible odds. A bit cliche but still enjoyable enough to get 4 stars from me. RC Bray is not perfect but also provides a reliable and consistent enough narration for 4 stars.

More Super Powereds goodness

If you enjoy the Super Powereds series of books then this is highly recommended to be listened to/read in between books 2 and 3. It has many nice details that play into developments during years 3 and 4 in the original series. Not to mention that Titan is a bad-A and lovable. This book managed to do the impossible and make a story centered around a physically unstoppable being somehow relatable and enjoyable to read. It even plays on how Titan doesn’t fit the classic role of an underdog that we find ourselves rooting for so often in popular fiction, and yet it gives us more complex and nuanced ways to relate and become invested in his development as a characters. It features very light gay romance that is honestly kind of sweet. Drew Hayes knows how to make stories that can be relistened to or reread again and again, each time you notice a new detail or funny way that something is described to make you chuckle. I don’t know if I’ll ever get tired of his style.

One of my more liked series - people die

Revisado: 07-31-21

This is my review for the series so far (books 1-7) I’m not a huge fan of the post apocalypse genre in literature. However, I did enjoy this series quite a bit (I listened/read through all 7 current books and planning to finish with book 8). Lots of characters end up dying, so it can be hard to get attached to any of them. It’s a pretty doom-filled series with potential death around every corner. That being said, it’s also high stakes and compelling. Book 7 ended in a good spot but we’ll have to see how book 8 continues/wraps up the whole series.
Also, RC Bray is a dependable narrator in this book and in other series. His delivery is a tad bit dry but he gets it done well enough and far better than I could. So who am I to complain? If you like suspense and can handle death/savage human and animal nature then you might like this series

Heavily inspired/reminiscent of Fallout lore - darker tone

This series is fairly dark and gloomy but I still found it compelling to listen to. As doomed as it all may seem it still manages to end on a high (slightly bittersweet) note.
People die, a lot of people die, some that you hoped wouldn’t, but those tragedies lend themselves well to the vibe of this series.
In my review title I say this series seems inspired by or reminiscent of the Fallout franchise/ lore. The main difference is that Fallout has Vaults where the main characters/heroes dwell whereas in this series it’s in the sky, in airships.
Besides that though there are many correlations between the two. The ships/vaults are always in need of new parts to make repairs to their safe havens. The world is in ruins due to nuclear war and is teaming with hostile life. Much of the hostile life is the result of genetic experimentation at the hands of a shady pre-war organization that was also responsible for the war and production of safe-havens that the protagonists use (think of vault tec from fallout).
In any case there are good fallout games but no good fallout books (as far as I know) so I think this series fills out that niche nicely. Definitely the best post-apocalypse series I’ve ever read (at least so far) will have to see how the next 5 books pan out.
