Historia
In 1540, 12-year-old Jahan arrives in Istanbul. As an animal tamer in the sultan's menagerie, he looks after the exceptionally smart elephant Chota and befriends (and falls for) the sultan's beautiful daughter Princess Mihrimah. A palace education leads Jahan to Mimar Sinan, the empire's chief architect, who takes Jahan under his wing as they construct (with Chota's help) some of the most magnificent buildings in history.

Once again Elik Shafak brings poetry and incredible story telling. The characters come to life and you find yourself rooting for or against them. Beautifully done.

Historia
When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors. Elwood’s only salvation is his friendship with fellow “delinquent” Turner, which deepens despite Turner’s conviction that Elwood is hopelessly naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

Brilliant
Revisado: 04-26-24
I didn’t expect the ending. Extremely well written. It’s hard to see the trajectory of these boys’ lives knowing the present still hasn’t gotten “incarceration” right.

Incredible
Revisado: 04-25-24
This book was so incredibly well written. It captured the cultural dynamic, the pressures on women, the views on parenting and children, and mental health very well. This is a book that’s hard to put down.

Powerful story reflecting the struggle of women
Revisado: 06-21-23
What a great story that once again caused me to reflect on the plight of women. BUT the accents in the performance were so annoying. Going from a British accent, to an attempt at Nigerian (or rather Yoruba) accent even though it sounded like a Ghanaian imitating a Nigerian. Going from British to faux Nigerian while supposedly being the voice of one person.

Hashimi draws you into the lives of the characters in a way that makes them real to you. Heartbreaking and yet you can’t give up rooting for Zeba. I have to read everything she has written.

Riveting and powerful
Revisado: 11-16-22
Tomi pulls us into Orisha with such power and descriptiveness that you believe you can feel, see the vibrant colors and smell the sea and forest. I found myself invested in the arc of each character and unable to put the book down. Despite having to suspend my rational brain knowing the geography of Nigeria and cities being in the “wrong” place, Adeyemi successfully weaves a tale that is gripping and well written.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Funny and powerful
Revisado: 01-13-19
Trevor leaves you wanting to know more about his life. With deft story telling, beautiful graphic story telling and splashes of humor Trevor takes you on a journey. Growing up in West Africa to a West African family I found many of his experiences relatable — from parental discipline, to hustlers, and more. But even the parts that did not have a personal connection were still relatable because of how Trevor shared his story. At once you feel empathy, understanding, sorrow and hope for Trevor, his family, his friends and family.
It’s an excellent book. A must read.
