Historia
It is almost impossible to understand Zen by studying it as you would other intellectual pursuits. The best way to understand Zen is, simply, to Zen. This is what author Eugen Herrigel allows us to do by sharing his own fascinating journey toward a comprehension of this illuminating philosophy. In Japan, an art such as archery is not practiced solely for utilitarian purposes such as learning to hit targets. Archery is also meant to train the mind and bring it into contact with the ultimate reality.

I'm not sure this could have been more inspiring. Beautiful work. Both in its economy and in its premise.

Historia
Inextricably linked with the fatwa called against its author in the wake of the novel’s publication, The Satanic Verses is, beyond that, a rich showcase for Salman Rushdie’s comic sensibilities, cultural observations, and unparalleled mastery of language. The book begins with two Indians plummeting from the sky after the explosion of their airliner, and proceeds through a series of metamorphoses, dreams and revelations.

Witty, imaginative and a little confusing
Revisado: 01-28-23
The performance was great. Excellent work from Dastor. The story is dense and fantastical, which makes it hard to follow at times. Undeniably funny and tragic characters.

Historia
Alice sees the other side of the Looking Glass, and enters another world of whimsical enchantment. She encounters argumentative chessmen, Jabberwocky monsters, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and some very insolent flowers. Carroll continues the development of his Wonderland in this second, and many feel richer, adventure of Alice.

Less fun than the original, still entertaining
Revisado: 01-09-23
The story itself is fun. Irreverent. Often surreal. Sometimes silly. Everything you’d expect from a Carroll story. Didn’t quite carry me to the same place as the first story, but the narrator’s work here was incredible. At times, you’ll have a hard time believing it isn’t Ewan Mcgregor. At other times, you’ll think 2 or 3 people must be providing the voices. Great work.

A Fascinating Concept
Revisado: 12-16-22
This was a sprawling story, spanning centuries and the entire planet. I had no problem finding the motivation to dive into the story at every opportunity. Unfortunately, I won't say it was in spite of the narration... but it certainly wasn't because of it. The accent work was pretty poor. Not bad overall, and would probably be better suited to roles with fewer or less culturally varied accents.

As always, Annie is inspiring. There's a lot of wisdom in this book. I wouldn't say the performance was exceptional, but it didn't get in the way of the story. And that's nice.

Historia
In the early spring of 1845, Henry David Thoreau built and lived in a cabin near the shore of Walden Pond in rural Massachusetts. For the next two years, he enacted his own Transcendentalist experiment, living a simple life based on self-reliance, individualism, and harmony with nature. The journal he kept at that time evolved into his masterwork, Walden, an eloquent expression of a uniquely American philosophy.

Thoreau is such a hipster
Revisado: 11-17-22
But he's a fascinating one. While the book is, at times, self-indulgent and verges on listening to someone else's grocery list... that's kind of the par you hope for on this course. You wouldn't want the type of man who voluntarily renounced citizenship to live in the woods to be entirely without social eccentricities.

Historia
Inverting the Pyramid is a pioneering soccer book that chronicles the evolution of soccer tactics and the lives of the itinerant coaching geniuses who have spread their distinctive styles across the globe. Through Jonathan Wilson's brilliant historical detective work, we learn how the South Americans shrugged off the British colonial order to add their own finesse to the game; how the Europeans harnessed individual technique and built it into a team structure; how the game once featured five forwards up front, while now a lone striker is not uncommon.

Excellent overview of tactical history
Revisado: 11-02-22
It's a really dense subject. Lots of names. Lots of maneuvering up and back on the timeline in order to stitch together global evolutions in as much context with one another as possible.
All of this could have bogged down the book. Probably should have, really. The biggest compliment I can pay to Jonathan Wilson is that... the book isn't bogged down at all. It's an easy listen and an enlightening follow.

Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he's assigned, he'll be in violation of Catch-22.

In turn depressing, disturbing, irreverent and hilarious. Satire by the fist-full, but also silliness and tongue-in-cheek a'plenty as well.
