I loved this deep dive into a well-drawn fantasy world. Complex characters, intrigue and suspense made this a terrific tale to listen to. Can't wait for book 3!

Delightful Peek Into the USO
Revisado: 11-02-24
I really enjoyed this peek into what life might have been like in the USO, as well as this motley crew of characters that become more family than friends. Suspenseful at times, romantic at others, charming until the last page.

Historia
Rome, AD 270. In the wake of the emperor’s marriage ban, rumors swirl that there is one man brave enough to perform wedding ceremonies in secret. A public notarius and leader of an underground church, Valentine believes the emperor’s edict unjust and risks his own life for the sake of his convictions. But as his fame grows, so do fears for his safety. Iris, the daughter of a Roman jailor, believes regaining her sight will ease the troubles at home. Her last hope rests in searching out Valentine and his church, but the danger of associating with people labeled a threat to the empire is great.

A Stellar Novel
Revisado: 10-26-24
I haven’t read fiction set in early Rome since Francine Rivers’s Mark of the Lion, because I doubted any could measure up to that series. I was wrong. This book had everything—historical detail, drama, romance, intrigue, and a spiritual message that will stick with me for a long time to come. I’ll look forward to reading more from this author!

Historia
In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world”. She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone. It started with an itch - first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her 23rd birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival.

Absorbing and eloquent
Revisado: 05-12-24
I loved this deep dive into a foreign world—that of a young woman fighting for her life, in and out of cancer wards. It made me value my relatively good health and life all the more, while empathizing with those fighting by cancer. Highly recommended.

Totally Satisfying Tale
Revisado: 10-30-23
I loved this beautiful love story set in the fictional land of Taletha. Somewhere between the heart-wrenching beginning of the Wife Market and the spell-binding ending, I became an Anna Augustine. And as a serious audio-book listener, I sincerely appreciated the skill of the dual narrators.

Historia
Many books engage the life of the Trinity at an academic level, focusing simply on fine points of theological distinction. In All Flame, Andrew Arndt drills down, with mystical power and missional energy, to the dream of the God revealed in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - showing how the Triune God is not far but near, already in touch with your life, already present to you, already at work in and through your circumstances to make you the kind of person he desires you to be: all flame.

This book is worth the price for the last three chapters alone—although the beginning is strong too! I bought the print book after listening to it because I wanted to go back and underline so much. Don’t miss this one.

Having been to Jerusalem three times, I'm loving Hunt's immersive story, illuminating so much of our lost history! She's true to history, but also, thrillingly, true to what's ahead...

You are set free and set up and set on fire. NOW you can get busy doing what you were placed on this planet to do. NOW you can be honest, honest, honest about all of it, even the hard stuff, even the humiliating stuff, even the secret stuff.

Spending Time with Jen is a Delight!
Revisado: 05-29-20
I adore Jen Hatmaker, and have adored her since I read her book 7 and listened to her speak at If Conferences. Over the last years, she's been through the wringer, personally and professionally, after becoming vocal about justice and LGBTQ issues. Honestly, I’m still sorting out how I think and feel about all of that myself, but just as I’m never fearful about hanging out with people who aren’t in lock-step with me politically, socially and religiously (just like Jesus would do, if he were here today), I’m not fearful of reading books that might not be in total alignment with my beliefs either. I think it’s good for our brains and hearts to be challenged! And regardless of where we land, we can love and honor our sisters doing the same. Listening to Fierce, Free and Full of Fire was another delightful gift of a read. For me, Chapter 3, on body image, was worth the price of the book alone. All in all, I finished the book feeling refreshed and encouraged, like I’d spent time with an insightful, thoughtful, fun friend. And the audio book is a gem, with all sorts of fun, casual asides from Jen, as well as snippets from her podcast that enhance and add to the material. Recommended. —LTB

She wanted sanctuary... Helena Reynolds will do anything to escape her life in London, even if that means traveling to a remote cliffside estate on the North Devon coast and marrying a complete stranger. But Greyfriar's Abbey isn't the sort of refuge she imagined. And ex-army captain Justin Thornhill - though he may be tall, dark, and devastatingly handsome - is anything but a romantic hero. He needed redemption... Justin has spent the last two decades making his fortune, settling scores, and suffering a prolonged period of torture in an Indian prison.

It's Been A Long Time Since I've Been Addicted
Revisado: 02-12-20
I can't remember the last time I'm loved a book so and then raced through others by the same author. Matthews is so adept at spinning her romantic tales of imperfect heroes, heroines with problems that need to be resolved, all in a page-turning way, that I'm now a Fan. Went from this to the next two in the series in two weeks. Anxiously awaiting book 4, which the author says will be out in April!
