Historia
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Life-saving, Life-affirming work.
Revisado: 11-10-24
While it definitely needs a suicide trigger-warning, I'm so glad it didn't have one. I think this will be a book I gift regularly. I don't even have other words to describe how perfect this book is right now. Just read it.

Historia
So often, Africa has been depicted simplistically as a uniform land of famines and safaris, poverty and strife, stripped of all nuance. In this bold and insightful book, Dipo Faloyin offers a much-needed corrective, weaving a vibrant tapestry of stories that bring to life Africa's rich diversity, communities, and histories. Starting with an immersive description of the lively and complex urban life of Lagos, Faloyin unearths surprising truths about many African countries' colonial heritage and tells the story of the continent's struggles with democracy through seven dictatorships.

Mind-blowing! Necessary!
Revisado: 03-15-24
Gives a primer on historical and modern context for African countries. Also contextualizes the western world's place in the past, present, and future of African development. Should be required reading. Can't wait to go down all the rabbit holes this opened for me about the histories of so many countries and peoples.

Revisado: 07-08-23
It was great until the author decided to follow tired tropes for zero discernable added narrative value. Queer ppl don't need this. Super unqualified to write gender/queer narratives with this mess. Wasted read.

Historia
For Zuberi, Uzochi, and Lencho, Nubia is a mystery. Before they were born, a massive storm destroyed their ancestral homeland, forcing their families to flee across the ocean to New York City. Nubia, a utopic island nation off the coast of West Africa, was no more, and their parents’ sorrow was too deep for them to share much of their history beyond the folklore. But New York, ravaged by climate change and class division, is far from a safe haven for refugees, and Nubians live as outcasts.

Compelling story, but bad for the culture.
Revisado: 09-02-22
The story moves fast and keeps the attention, but the writing perpetuates tired tropes that perpetuate homophobia, internalized racism, and sexism. Could be way better.

Coming of age in Detroit, she can’t imagine settling for a 9-to-5 job—despite her unusual looks, Opal believes she can be a star. Would be Harmful if It Were Readable
Revisado: 07-06-20
This book feels like a far less engaging attempt to rewrite Coates's Between The World And Me, but with neither Coates's storytelling ability nor his respect he had for the established scholarship on racism. But I am grateful that it isn't remotely compelling. if it were easier to read, it would require a lot more unteaching for those of us engaged in the work of teaching against racism.

Historia
Continuously available in print since 1968, this novel has become embedded in progressive anti-racist culture with wide circulation of the book and hotly debated film. A literary classic, The Spook Who Sat by the Door is a strong comment on entrenched racial inequities in the United States in the late 1960s. With its focus on the “militancy” that characterized the Black Power movement of the 1960s and 1970s, this is the story of one man’s reaction to ruling-class hypocrisy.
