Historia
One September morning, Doug accidentally runs right into another surfer on the beach. There are rules about these things. The other guy should call Doug a jerk, Doug should say, "my bad", and they should both paddle back out and move on. Problem is, the other surfer doesn't want to move on. He wants to fight. And for once in his life, Doug wants to fight back.

Another "Shawshank" story...
Revisado: 08-11-24
...but who doesn't like a good Shawshank when they hear one? I thought it was well-written and engaging, even when the title's word play works on the level to draw the reader in to listen!
"Well, it's only an hour....and I like Ed Harris'voice....oh sure! Why not?"
It's light, and Winslow does a good job of getting you on the side of the main character. A nice Sancerre to refresh and open the palette!

An Addict's Groundhog Day
Revisado: 11-23-22
This book could also be called "How to Self-Sabotage Without Really Trying by Chandler Bing" While Matthew Perry(MP) is a talented individual, he proves he is no better than anyone else at coping with life and dealing with life's problems. This book really angered me because he's a VIP wherever he goes and got chance after chance at sobriety and he flushed them all! All the while, his colleagues in the industry just keep propping him up in front of the camera for the money shot. This really sounds like they were enabling him!!! With his talk of how much he got paid for various projects, the houses and the cars, it really begs the question if any of these "VIPs" have tried to go through recovery WITHOUT access to all the trappings of their lives that got them there? How might MPs life look if he didn't have $3k to give a drug dealer for oxycontin while he was IN REHAB!!! Or a green Porsche? Or a Bentley? Or the 40th floor of a high rise in Century City? These days I think everyone knows someone who has gone, or is going through recovery from drug/alcohol addiction. The difference is the people we know don't have the financial means to do what MP did, or a trashy novel to sell when they've achieved some modicum of success.
As for the performance, MP still slurs his speech so much it should come with a trigger warning. This makes me wonder if he's really sober, or has messed himself up so badly he can't speak clearly anymore.
As I have been a fan of MPs in the past, it has brought one point home; we should not ever "VIP" these people anymore or hold them in high esteem as they have shown themselves to be every bit as flawed and broken as the rest of us. So they can wait in line with the rest of us.

Legendary Grammy Award-winning producer and towering musical icon T Bone Burnett speaks plainly, which is all the more reason why his stunning new Words + Music, The Confederacy: Truth and Reconciliation, lands with such force. And his songs, delivered straight from the heart, carry with them the weight of unvarnished truth and the wisdom he’s gathered from a lifetime.

I'm also from Ft. Worth, TX and old enough to remember the subway that went to Leonard's Department Store. I seem to remember the signs on the water fountains, but knowing what they meant. This is completely accurate.
The only thing I cant believe about this book is that there are no credits for the musicians that played on it!!! I'm also a professional musician and I can't believe the great "Hillbilly guitar player" wouldnt credit his fellow musicians!!! WTH T-Bone?!?!?!

Historia
Hilketa is a frenetic and violent pastime where players attack each other with swords and hammers. The main goal of the game: obtain your opponent's head and carry it through the goalposts. With flesh and bone bodies, a sport like this would be impossible. But all the players are "threeps", robot-like bodies controlled by people with Haden's Syndrome, so anything goes. No one gets hurt, but the brutality is real, and the crowds love it. Until a star athlete drops dead on the playing field.

I like the story, but Amber Benson's performance..
Revisado: 09-01-20
...wasn't as good as her performance on the first book "Lock In". Her performance in the first book was more natural and unforced. In this book, Ms. Benson sounded like she was stuck in the same vocal pattern; the same phrasing over and over again. I paid less attention to this book because of it. It's subtle, but it's there. Her performance wasn't bad, just not great. The story was good, and Mr. Scalzi is very good at setting the scene. I could have used a little more action to build the tension, but that's just my preference. I look forward to other titles by Mr. Scalzi!

Historia
Zachary Quinto - best known for his role as the Nimoy-approved Spock in the recent Star Trek reboot and the menacing, power-stealing serial killer, Sylar, in Heroes - brings his well-earned sci-fi credentials and simmering intensity to this audio-exclusive novella from master storyteller John Scalzi. One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know.

Well-written and magnificently performed!
Revisado: 07-28-20
Dealing with an unexplained phenomenon, the environment in which the story takes place is barren. This also befits the subject matter, as the subject has relevance in our own gestalt.
While the story itself is pretty threadbare on details, Zachary Quinto does a fantastic job of bringing all characters to life in the story! I really hope he does more of this kind of work!

Revisado: 09-22-19
I made through the first couple of chapters not wanting to waste my credit, but that's all I could take. The title should be "How to skim your life: some quick rules of thumb for 20 yr old girls." There is some good information here, just not for a middle aged man who thought the title was interesting. I should have listened more closely to the sample. Live and learn. Oh well.

Historia
She was already well-known in some circles before March 6, 2018, but that's probably the first time you heard the name Stormy Daniels. That's the day she filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump over a nondisclosure agreement negotiated before the election but never signed. How did Stormy Daniels become the woman willing to take on a president? What is it like to be reviled by some, held up as a beacon of hope by others, and to be an object of fascination to all? In this audiobook, Stormy Daniels tells her whole story for the first time....

Very tabloid-ish and trashy
Revisado: 05-11-19
Disappointing. The narration was professional, but the story was dramatized in a "romance novel" style, that I thought was very gimmicky. I believe her story and she's seen some true horrors in her life, but the book always goes back to this groin-level dynamic. I know.....I know.....what did I expect from a porn star?!?!? But because she has overcome her upbringing, you want it to be so much more.

Historia
In this incisive memoir, Steve Lukather tells the complete Toto story. He also lifts the lid on what went on behind the closed studio doors, shedding light on the unique creative processes of some of the most legendary names in music: from Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Stevie Nicks, and Elton John to Miles Davis, Joni Mitchell, Bruce Springsteen, and Aretha Franklin. Lukather’s extraordinary tale also encompasses the dark side of stardom and the American Dream. Frank, engaging, and often hilarious, The Gospel According to Luke is no ordinary rock memoir.

Historia
The shift toward automation is about to create a tsunami of unemployment. Not in the distant future - now. One recent estimate predicts 13 million American workers will lose their jobs within the next seven years - jobs that won't be replaced. In a future marked by restlessness and chronic unemployment, what will happen to American society? In The War on Normal People, Andrew Yang paints a dire portrait of the American economy. Rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation software are making millions of Americans' livelihoods irrelevant.

A great book that addresses real issues...
Revisado: 02-23-19
but he should have hired someone else to read it. The performance is terrible. The first two-thirds of the book paint a very bleak picture. The last third of the book have some inventive solutions, which may or may not be feasible but the real point of the book is to acquaint us with the idea that radical changes are coming and that we will have to adapt or suffer the consequences. This is why it pains me to say that the performance of this book sounds like a high school kid giving a book report.

Revisado: 02-23-19
John needs more ideas for actually achieving some of the goals set forth in the book. Also, the book seems more mantra than actual guide. I realize everyone's situation is different, bit it's as if he's writing for a very limited demographic, and I dont think I'm in said demo. I gave up trying to be an alpha male a long time ago, and it seems like that's what he's painting a picture of.
