Mary Trump grew up in a family divided by its patriarch’s relentless drive for money and power. The daughter of Freddy Trump, the highly accomplished, dashing eldest son of wealthy real estate developer Fred Trump, and Linda Clapp, a flight attendant from a working-class family, Mary lived in the shadow of Freddy’s humiliation at the hands of his father.

Remarkable resilience
Revisado: 09-20-24
At first I was discomfited by the short, somewhat sporadic format and really short chapters. But it came to me that this the exact manner in which I, and probably others, tend to recall our lives. You can’t recall everything but odd moments, important moments, stimulating moments, disappointing moments, and certainly hurtful moments—life comes back in little blurbs, like a disconnected slide show. Acknowledging that, made it easier to follow the line of Mary’s life as she reveals it. I ended up appreciating her approach.
It is a truly sad telling. But I am impressed and moved by her resilience in surviving such a dysfunctional family. I don’t just sympathize, but empathize with her sense of feeling not just unloved, but unlovable. It’s not easy to focus on blaming those we love if we don’t understand that the fault emanates from them rather than from us. I’m glad she had the fortitude to write a book that so keenly reveals what Trump is and why he is that way. I’m glad she sought help and has been able to acknowledge her feelings and why she feels that way. This book is well written and memorable, and well worth the listen.

Historia
On November 21, 1914, after sailing more than ten thousand miles from Norway to the Antarctic Ocean, the Endurance finally succumbed to the surrounding ice. Ernest Shackleton and his crew had navigated the 144-foot, three-masted wooden vessel to Antarctica to become the first to cross the barren continent, but early season pack ice trapped them in place offshore. They watched in silence as the ship’s stern rose twenty feet in the air and disappeared into the frigid sea, then spent six harrowing months marooned on the ice in its wake.

Overcoming environmental obstacles
Revisado: 08-02-24
I enjoyed hearing about the overall experience involved in finding the Endurance. Overlaying the modern day difficulties with those endured by Shackleton’s efforts and tragedies, was enlightening and moving. I’m amazed by the fact that Shackleton didn’t lose any men, although the fact that they had to kill all their animals was incredibly sad for an animal lover like me. Still, the adventure and fortitude shown by both expeditions was fascinating to learn about. I have a BS in Archaeology but never used it. I ended up working in the environmental field. Even so, I love archaeology and was pleased that the author shared the details of this fascinating endeavor. He’s leading a remarkable life.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

Here for the first time is the definitive untold story of Donald Trump’s years as a reality TV star. Trump himself admits he might not have been president without The Apprentice. Now, just as he uncovered the chaos inside the daytime favorite The View in his bestselling Ladies Who Punch, Ramin Setoodeh chronicles Trump’s dramatic tenure as New York’s ultimate boss in the boardroom, a mirage created by Survivor producer Mark Burnett and NBC boss Jeff Zucker.

Continued insight
Revisado: 06-27-24
I was curious about Trump’s Apprentice days. I never watched the show, I had no interest in it whatsoever and that was long before I knew who Trump was. All I remember is commercials gave me the impression it was mean spirited. But then I find most reality based shows have an undertone of meanness. Certainly that suited Trump. It was interesting to hear how attached he was/is to it. Too bad it lasted so long because we can certainly blame much of the development of his fake persona on the followers who put him in the White House because they embraced the fake. This was an interesting read. Substantiated my opinion of felon Trump.

Connection
Revisado: 06-12-24
This book was a great connection to the people directly involved in and committed to our environment and to addressing the issues of climate change. It definitely provided a clear image of scientists as just being people like everyone else, although they are people more focused on their goals than others are often capable of. Without their tenacity and passion a great deal of knowledge would never be achieved.
The only fault I find is with the format, and that is strictly in terms of how it presents in audio form. When you’re actually reading words, you pick up on changes occurring but if you’re listening to those words, any minor distraction or momentary straying of attention can throw you off. The format of this book, which involved a constant switching of points of view, occasionally threw me for a loop. If I missed the name of whoever was speaking (and a number of times there were a lot of quick changes) I would get confused as to WHO was speaking when I refocused. I would think, oh, the author is gay. No. That was someone else speaking. The author is pregnant…no, that’s another person. I had a lot of those small confusions throughout. I loved the descriptions, the intent, the stories of the individuals, and the obvious passion expressed for the health of our world, but the format was difficult in audio form. Still, this an excellent book and I’m glad I listened.

Historia
Small acts of courage matter. Sometimes, they change the world. Our history books are filled with the stories of those who fought for democracy and freedom—for idealism itself—against all odds, from Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela to Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. These iconic struggles for social change illustrate the importance of engagement and activism, and offer a template for the battles we are fighting today. But using the right words is often easier than taking action; action can be hard, and costly.

Engaging and Inspirational
Revisado: 05-25-24
I love to listen to Ali Velshi talk. Yes, he has a wonderful voice, but it is his intellect and insight that tends to make what he says an event of cognitive stimulation. In the history of his family’s migration he provides revelations about the history of conditions and attitudes that I really only had an inkling of. Caste systems and apartheid, bigotry and oppression, small minds and expressions of self-importance so outrageous they make the concept of a “bully” meek in comparison. I envy the richness of his family ties and, stressful though it often was, the meaningful experiences of their many journeys. I envy that he has garnered such insightful wealth from both the failures and wins of their lives. And I thank him for the inspiration of a most practical passion about viewing cultural differences as a bounty and not a threat. I’m sick to death of the small minds and self-serving attitudes of people with money and too much power working to foist their personal biases on everyone else. Thank you, Ali Velshi, for clarifying what I feel humanity should be.

Historia
Kim Stanley Robinson first ventured into the Sierra Nevada mountains during the summer of 1973. He returned from that encounter a changed man, awed by a landscape that made him feel as if he were simultaneously strolling through an art museum and scrambling on a jungle gym like an energized child. He has returned to the mountains throughout his life—more than a hundred trips—and has gathered a vast store of knowledge about them. The High Sierra is his lavish celebration of this exceptional place.

A Great Adventure
Revisado: 05-17-24
I appreciate the details the author provided throughout the book. He covered the subject from every conceivable direction, with descriptive passages about the environment, the landscape, the geology, the ecology, the history, the multitude of personal sojourns, personal relationships, and personal inspiring revelations during his life long association with the High Sierras. I’ve never been a great outdoor adventurer, although 30 years of assessing properties for environmental issues gave me the opportunity to traipse through some great woodlands. As an environmentalist and a lover of animals, I was moved by his observations and heartfelt connection to the land and all its inhabitants. His chapter providing resource materials is generous. There is so much great information in this book, I’m going to have to listen again simply because I know I missed some of it! Thank you Kim Robinson for sharing a truly remarkable life in a truly remarkable setting.

Loved the whole book, no exceptions. It was eloquent, stirring, and exceptionally detailed. I love details. I learned more about specific Arctic animals than I’ve ever known. Barry Lopez revealed a more perceptive cognition of the land, the culture, and the wildlife than I’ve ever read. What a beautiful soul he was.

Historia
Policing the Womb brings to life the chilling ways in which women have become the targets of secretive state surveillance of their pregnancies. Michele Goodwin expands the reproductive health and rights debate beyond abortion to include how legislators increasingly turn to criminalizing women for miscarriages, stillbirths, and threatening the health of their pregnancies. The horrific results include women giving birth while shackled in leg irons, in solitary confinement, and even delivering in prison toilets.

Revelation
Revisado: 04-07-24
I’ve been alarmed by the regression these last few years in women’s freedoms. It IS a war on women that shocks and alarms me. I’m 75 (very close to 76) and never had children so the dangers of pregnancy and childbirth have never been on my radar. But women’s rights used to be something I took for granted. Not anymore. I never realized how many men are afraid of strong women, or, it seems, women in general. Not just afraid, but appear to actually dislike women. How else could they be so cruel, indifferent, petty, dismissive, and selfish when forcing their personal ideas and attitudes on half our population? Having a penis, apparently, determines their status and right to subjugate the rest of humanity. Especially if that penis is white! There are realities and statistics presented in this book that I was unaware of, and I thank the author for these profound revelations. I not only listened to every word, but purchased the hard copy so t could review and pass on the information she has so eloquently gathered and shared.

Revisado: 03-16-24
I liked the details of the rescues undertaken , and appreciated learning the background of the men and women who were involved. Their stories were harrowing and inspirational, and knowing that they spoke about the rescues from actual experience made me proud. I’ve never had that kind of physicality or bravery. It’s good to know that such people exist. The book was worth hearing.
