Would like to hear more of Wil Wheaton in books like this one. My kind of book. Humor, intrigue, cats, creative fantasy, and all without needing romance for completion. Perfect.

Wonderfully written, but w/a huge flaw
Revisado: 09-03-22
Taking this straight from badkitty1016's review on Postcards From Purgatory, b/c it's exactly the way I feel: "I really enjoyed this book, and had nothing bad to say about it until the ending. O’Farrell gets to the climax and then it just stops. There is no resolution, except to the relationship between Esme and Kitty. And that’s not a good resolution. I really don’t like it when novels have cliffhanger endings. I know that novelists like to experiment and all that, but I’m a traditionalist in the sense that I like to read books that resolve the plot."

Found myself identifying w/a few of the parents in this book even though we had two healthy babies w/no problems. Fascinating story of adoption and families.

Historia
In the town of Night Vale, there’s a faceless old woman who secretly lives in everyone’s home, but no one knows how she got there or where she came from...until now. Told in a series of eerie flashbacks, the story of The Faceless Old Woman goes back centuries to reveal an initially blissful and then tragic childhood on a Mediterranean Estate in the early 19th century, her rise in the criminal underworld of Europe, a nautical adventure with a mysterious organization of smugglers, her plot for revenge on the ones who betrayed her, and ultimately her death and its aftermath.

Nauseatingly depressing
Revisado: 01-15-22
Sick book about a damaged main character who learned nothing in a lifetime but how to inflict damage and pain. Reminded me of Gone Girl, so if you liked that you'll love this. Not my thing. Returned.

Historia
It is 1870 and Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna's parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own.

What an interesting -and at the same time sweet-story. So much going on, inside the characters' heads and outside in their worlds. I'm usually not much for a Western, but I loved this one.

somewhat confusing ending offering no conclusion, no meaning, etc. I really didn't care enough to consider it a waste of time; I need some background noise while I work & this was good enough. Generally I want more out of a book, though. This is a beautiful National Geographic scene of the frozen north, and an introspective monologue of an astronaut, but not much else. Made me decide not to see the movie.

Historia
Every life reaches that crucial intersection, the place where you must choose your fate, or have it chosen for you. For best-selling author Rich Cohen (The Fish That Ate the Whale, The Last Pirate of New York), it came in a writing workshop senior year in college, when, at 17, he had to knuckle under to a ruthless professor or make a righteous, self-defeating stand.

Loved this story!
Revisado: 07-31-20
Some of the 1-star reviews are ridiculous. Today, any child at public school has heard every bad word under the sun by the age of 12; outstanding movies, books, and songs contain a few 4-letter words - no reason to write off the entire thing!
I thought this was a very well presented and interesting story on the value of persistence and being true to oneself, an insight into the bare bones of a writer’s process & his triumph over self-doubt, and a beautifully told relationship story between a father and son. I really enjoyed it.

Historia
Imagine living with a fear so visceral each day that simply walking down the street draws terror to one’s core. That’s the best case scenario for a woman on the streets of Juárez, Mexico. Kate del Castillo (La Reina del Sur) delivers a stunning one-woman performance that transports listeners from a New York stage to the treacherous streets of Juárez, Mexico, where thousands of women have been murdered in an ongoing epidemic of violence.

so moving and important.
Revisado: 11-17-19
Thank you Audible for making this one of your free monthlies; it’s the only way I’d have seen it. We fly into El Paso several times per year, bound for Las Cruces where my husband grew up and where his parents live. They have family in El Paso, too, but he knew absolutely nothing about this. Now he does. We visited Juarez in the late 1990s and it was beautiful and thriving. The Mexican government should be ashamed of itself and how Mexico has deteriorated.
It’s important that Americans are aware of what’s going on.
