This book is beautiful, realistic, heartbreaking, and hilarious. An absolute love letter to women's work, believing women, and believing survivors. In one scene, an adult gives one of the most sensitive responses to a child disclosure of abuse that I've ever read.

Motherhood from a Jungian perspective. Spiritual yet down to earth. I gained so much from this book. It helped me mine my motherhood experience for wisdom and confidence. Beautiful.

Hunter Biden doesn't hold back on the gory details of his drug behaviors...but the problem is that he doesn't have much space between him and his addiction yet. So while he does admit to his ludicrous exploits, he glosses over large swaths of his disease and the impact it's had on his family. He details HIS accomplishments ad nauseum, HIS grief, HIS hardships, and HIS resentments, he barely mentions his wife of 22 years more than 5 times, rarely registers the hurts, fear, and betrayal his addiction wreaked upon his 3 daughters, instead positioning himself as terminally unique, the savior for Beau's widow and children, and magical soul mate of Melissa, 1 hour after meeting her.
Mr. Biden, 12 steps and a few years sobriety in, check back in with us.
Unintentionally, though, this book provides an ugly yet informative portrait of the eclipsing of a human's spirit from addiction, how it impairs our judgement, our memory, our priorities. It takes all if it's allowed.
I hope for his sake Hunter can reclaim his spirit. He's clearly an intelligent man with the capacity for more.

I am an addiction professional, family member of several addicts, and codependent in recovery. I went through a period of reading tons of addiction memoirs. They can be harrowing and are always compelling, but I've been searching for a memoir of the other side: that of the spouse or family member who is aware and sober through those harrowing events that the addict won't have to remember. Boy, did I find it.
Kathleen Buhle has certainly given us a searing, gutteral account of the pain of life with an addict; and yet, her story is her own. She doesn't shrink from telling the ugly acts of the addict in her life or of herself. She reflects with as much clear-eyed vulnerability on her own mistakes as those of her former husband. I'm actually in awe of her. She tells HER experience and how it intertwined with the path of multigenerational trauma and addiction and nearly took her spirit. She's done the work, and we can all benefit from her sharing it.

Thank you, Danielle, for sharing your story. I hope you and your Grandma, the love of your life, can live the rest of your days in peace.
Your description of child abuse and trauma is so visceral and heartbreaking, it should be required reading for anyone who works with, loves, or wants kids. The finding the humor and humility in your story is beautiful.
