Historia
Everywhere around us are echoes of the past. Those echoes define the boundaries of states and countries, how we pray and how we fight. They determine what money we spend and how we earn it at work, what language we speak and how we raise our children. From Wondery, host Patrick Wyman, PhD (“Fall Of Rome”) helps us understand our world and how it got to be the way it is.

Patrick Wyman does a fantastic job of doing really detailed and in depth history in a way that's accessible. I really enjoy this podcast, I've listened to every episode, some more than once.

In the best-selling tradition of The Swerve and A Distant Mirror, The Verge tells the story of a period that marked a decisive turning point for both European and world history. Here, author Patrick Wyman examines two complementary and contradictory sides of the same historical coin: the world-altering implications of the developments of printed mass media, extreme taxation, exploitative globalization, humanistic learning, gunpowder warfare, and mass religious conflict in the long term, and their intensely disruptive consequences in the short-term.

An illuminating look into a fascinating 40 years
Revisado: 08-08-21
This is a really engaging and interesting book that paints a detailed picture of many of the groundbreaking things going on in this period. I'm pretty in the weeds with history, but this will be really accessible even to people who aren't while still being very engaging to people who already are familiar with the period. I'm really impressed, I think this book ranks really highly among accessible histories of the middle ages and early modern period. Especially impressive because it's the author's first book.
The author's narration is very good, Patrick Wyman does a fantastic job. That's hugely important and saves the audiobook because the audio production is not good. The audio quality is poor for a professional recording and the editing is quite bad. The 2nd chapter is repeated in it's entirety and smaller edits are very noticeable with big changes in quality and audio tone. Make sure you download the high quality audible version of the book, it's necessary to compensate for the poor recording quality if you want this to be listenable.
All that said the high quality version of the audiobook is listenable and the narration is well done. And the book is really good. So I'm still giving it five stars. Just keep the audio quality issues in mind if that's something that you have trouble with.

More than 5,000 years ago, the city of Uruk in what's now Iraq was the heart of a new civilization. Cities, kings, armies, monumental temples, and writing were all new developments. But why here? Why then? And who suffered so that civilization could rise? See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

I've listened to every episode so far of Futility Closet. The idea of a historical story and a thinking puzzle being put together each week is one I never would have thought of but it works incredibly well. Both parts are engaging and the chemistry between the two hosts (who are married) is really wonderful. I highly recommend it.

Historia
A story of defiance and determination by a controversial scientist, this is Lee Berger's own take on finding Homo naledi, an all-new species on the human family tree and one of the greatest discoveries of the 21st century. In 2013, Lee Berger, a National Geographic explorer-in-residence, heard of a cache of bones in a hard-to-reach underground cave in South Africa. He put out a call around the world for petite collaborators - men and women small and adventurous enough to be able to squeeze through eight-inch tunnels to reach a sunless cave forty feet underground. It worked.

Historia
The First World War is one of history’s greatest tragedies. In this remarkable and intimate account, author G. J. Meyer draws on exhaustive research to bring to life the story of how the Great War reduced Europe’s mightiest empires to rubble, killed 20 million people, and cracked the foundations of the world we live in today. World War I is unique in the number of questions about it that remain unsettled. After more than 90 years, scholars remain divided on these questions, and it seems likely that they always will.

Historia
Ignition! is the story of the search for a rocket propellant which could be trusted to take man into space. This search was a hazardous enterprise carried out by rival labs who worked against the known laws of nature, with no guarantee of success or safety. John Drury Clark writes with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy about the development of the explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. The resulting volume is as much a memoir as a work of history, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of an enterprise that eventually took men to the moon.

A Fantastic Read
Revisado: 10-13-19
This is a classic and very fun history of liquid rocket propellants up till 1970ish. it contains some chemistry but I think you can enjoy it even if you only have a decent high school chemistry background. You definitely should look some of the chemicals up so you have a feel for what they are.
the performance is quite good. The only flaw is that the narrator occasionally misreads Al as A capital i instead of A lowercase L and the same with Cl. I was able to follow it.
I first read this book as a college student and loved it, it's nice to be able to come back to it after a bit more than a decade.

The Sleepwalkers is historian Christopher Clark's riveting account of the explosive beginnings of World War I. Drawing on new scholarship, Clark offers a fresh look at World War I, focusing not on the battles and atrocities of the war itself but on the complex events and relationships that led a group of well-meaning leaders into brutal conflict.
