Historia
With an in-depth look at the two most empowering years in the life of Marilyn Monroe, The Girl details how The Seven Year Itch created an icon and sent the star on an adventure of self-discovery and transformation from a controlled wife and contract player into a businesswoman and unlikely feminist whose power is still felt today. When Marilyn Monroe stepped over a subway grating as The Girl in The Seven Year Itch and let a gust of wind catch the skirt of her pleated white dress, an icon was born.

Trust Michelle
Revisado: 06-07-18
I have yet to read Michelle's book but when it comes to Marilyn Monroe books it's important to know who you can't and can trust to tell you the truth. I have read Michelle's first Marilyn book "Marilyn: Private and Confidential" and in it she asses Marilyn's life with holistic objectivism. No sensationalism.
So if you care about the truth of Marilyn more than the Legend, trust Michelle.

Historia
An 11-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

Fine but sloppy
Revisado: 06-01-18
I thought the beginning was strong but the second half of the novel felt sloppy and 2hrs from the end I lost interest
If you’re a fan of King it’s not a waste of time but don’t expect to be blown away

Historia
Like most families, they had their secrets...and they hid them under a genteelly respectable veneer. No onlooker would guess that prim Vera Hillyard and her beautiful, adored younger sister, Eden, were locked in a dark and bitter combat over one of those secrets. England in the '50s was not kind to women who erred, so they had to use every means necessary to keep the truth hidden behind closed doors - even murder.

Really awesome mystery. It tracks 20 years of details leading up to the crime as well as much of the lives of every surviving participant.
Absolutely magical; you just have to pay attention.

Historia
Peking in 1937 is a heady mix of privilege and scandal, opulence and opium dens, rumors and superstition. The Japanese are encircling the city, and the discovery of Pamela Werner's body sends a shiver through already nervous Peking. Is it the work of a madman? One of the ruthless Japanese soldiers now surrounding the city? With the suspect list growing and clues sparse, two detectives - one British and one Chinese - race against the clock to solve the crime before the Japanese invade and Peking as they know it is gone forever.

4 1/2 Stars: Stick with it
Revisado: 02-21-18
I don’t like cold case true crime books:
A) the world around me is a constant reminder that justice is almost never served and their bummer
B) what’s the point? Like genuinely what do I have to gain? Certainly not more information
Midnight in Peking starts off like a usual cold case book; a gruesome crime scene, disjointed investigation, uncooperative witnesses, and little useable evidence.
But halfway through something magical happens and every revelation is jaw dropping and a testament to ETC Werner’s love for his daughter. The man never let it go and his conclusions are satisfactory enough.
Hooray for stubborn weirdos!

Historia
A psychologist in suburban Cleveland, Dustin is drifting through his forties when he hears the news: His adopted brother, Rusty, is being released from prison. Thirty years ago, Rusty received a life sentence for the massacre of Dustin’s parents, aunt, and uncle. The trial came to epitomize the 1980s hysteria over Satanic cults; despite the lack of physical evidence, the jury believed the outlandish accusations Dustin and his cousin made against Rusty. Now, after DNA analysis has overturned the conviction, Dustin braces for a reckoning.

Historia
Headstrong and beautiful, the young housemaid Sally Jupp is put rudely in her place, strangled in her bed behind a bolted door. Coolly brilliant policeman Adam Dalgliesh of Scotland Yard must find her killer among a houseful of suspects, most of whom had very good reason to wish her ill. Cover Her Face is P. D. James' electric debut novel, an ingeniously plotted mystery that immediately placed her among the masters of suspense.

But you get used to it and it's not so bad. The story is interesting enough so don't give up on it because the audio is garbage. I promise you'll forget once you're engrossed in the book.

Historia
In the most extraordinary journey Ann Rule has ever undertaken, America's master of true crime has spent more than two decades researching the story of the Green River Killer, who murdered more than 49 young women. Green River, Running Red is a harrowing account of a modern monster, a killer who walked among us undetected. It is also the story of his quarry -- of who these young women were and who they might have become.

All About the Girls
Revisado: 03-19-17
GRK story told through the victims.
It's always nice to read a long well researched true crime that revolves around the victims lives, movements, and disappearances instead of one focus on the killers movements.
I always find the girls' lives more fascinating and telling of the killers psyche than brutal descriptions of their violation.
If you're into that and books like Lost Girls by Robert Kolker you'll like this one

Historia
The wayward son of a revered Civil War general, Roland Molineux enjoyed good looks, status, and fortune - hardly the qualities of a prime suspect in a series of shocking, merciless cyanide killings. Molineux's subsequent indictment for murder led to two explosive trials and a sex-infused scandal that shocked the nation. Bringing to life Manhattan's Gilded Age, Schechter captures all the colors of the tumultuous legal proceedings.

A Book Without an Accompanying Wiki Page Is Always A Treat
Revisado: 02-27-17
True Crime fever has swept the nation and between podcasts and websites it's hard to find an American crime story that hasn't been rehashed a thousand times in as many ways.
The Devil's Gentleman is one exception. The information presented in this book can not be found as a whole elsewhere, only scraps of articles and legal documents. Schechter's research is extensive and presenting in an entertaining unbiased manner.
I can't recommend it enough to anyone who loved Starvation Heights, the Mad Sculptor, and anything by Erik Larson.

Come on Gregg (no spoilers)
Revisado: 10-26-16
I love Gregg Olson for the most part, I mean he's a law and order type who often forgets the justice system can't operate on the assumption of guilt but, I love the way he weaves narrative and meticulous research so I can usually ignore any overt right-wing leanings.
He's interviewed so many victims you can't really blame him for developing a less than holistic view of justice.
But this book's tone was so sexist I had a difficult time understanding the true character of the murderer.
The married men she slept with are never held accountable for their part, he excessively uses ugly words like slut & bitch (seemingly not just in quotes) and none of it is necessary.
She does so many other, more incriminating, ugly things that "promiscuity" would've been a fine descriptor. The word he used to describe women with that behavior before.
I'll still love you and I just bought Abandoned Prayers but, come on Gregg...this was disappointing.

Historia
This true story was the basis for the Broadway play, The Runner Stumbles, and the movie of the same name. In 1907, a Felician nun disappeared from her rural convent. When her bones were found buried in the dirt-floored basement of the remote, Gothic church she served, it caused a national sensation. Who killed her? The handsome priest? The jealous housekeeper? And, what other secret was uncovered along with her bones?

Do Not Judge A "Book" By Its Crap Cover
Revisado: 10-18-16
Beautifully written and researched. If it was done any other way this story might of dull.
I mean it's about old timey Catholics, but the way the author weaves in personal letter and descriptions frames each participation in a fascinating light.
She even managed to make the details about Catholic laws and rituals interesting.
On par with Starvation Heights
