Miserable story
Revisado: 07-21-21
This is a miserable book about miserable people. I gave up about one third of the way into the book when I finally realized that there is no plot to this story. In the first several hours the story consists almost entirely of descriptions of heroin addicts shooting up or stealing so they can buy more dope. There was no mystery nor even a central character to follow. I’m returning it.

Historia
Gifted storyteller Winston Groom, the best-selling author of Forrest Gump, has written the fascinating story of three extraordinary heroes who defined aviation during the great age of flight: Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Jimmy Doolittle. These cleverly interwoven tales of their heart-stopping adventures take us from the feats of World War I through the heroism of World War II and beyond, including daring military raids and survival at sea, and will appeal to fans of Unbroken, The Greatest Generation, and Flyboys.

If you're a pilot you should get this book.
Revisado: 06-23-21
I wasn’t sure that I would like this book, but the reviews and ratings got me to give it a try. It was great. I don’t think that non-pilots would enjoy it as much as I did, but the history behind the aviation achievements and the personal stories of these three icons was extremely well written and well researched. Dean's narration was also excellent.

Unsatisfying Ending
Revisado: 04-23-21
For a thriller this was a pretty simplistic story. Nothing was particularly exciting except for the description of a single shoot-out. The ending was also very unsatisfying and unrealistic.
The author failed to do his homework. For example he told of a "9 mm assault rifle". Also, without the text it was impossible for me to tell if the narrator was making mistakes or if the author actually used the wrong word, but there were several occasions when it was clear that it appeared that the author didn't know the meaning of the word he used.

Revisado: 04-16-21
A murdered woman’s body is found within the first minutes of this book but after two and a half hours not one word has been written about solving the case.
Apparently the author thinks that I am intensely interested in how all the woman’s friends and acquaintances feel about her death and their relationships with her while she was alive. He covered it in great detail for literally hours. With no end in sight to the descriptions of everyone’s feelings I could take it no longer and gave up.
It took me an hour to deal with the terrible narration format where each narrator reads a chapter from the various characters’ points of view. I finally could deal with it but I never liked it.

This story has no plot.
Revisado: 02-07-21
This is a story of a warrior member of a Viking-like society that exists by raiding and stealing. That should have been enough to put me off this book right off the bat, but I stuck with it. As it turns out, the story proceeds from one battle to the next with no real goal or objective behind all the fighting. I’ll admit that the description of the action was excellent, but it seems there wasn’t much more to this book. What’s more, the ending ties up the first chapter in this saga, but leaves a lot of open ends that were not tied up. I don’t intend to continue with this series.

This book has no ending!
Revisado: 01-24-21
As I feared, this book doesn’t have an ending. It drops the story with the main characters in safe situations, but still in situations. I REALLY don’t like it when a author tries to force me to buy the next book just to get closure to the story that was started in the first book. I don’t mind so long as I’m told in advance that a certain book in a series doesn’t actually end, but that’s a rare occurrence. Audible’s page for this series has only three books (as of January 2021), but the page states, “9 books in series”. Presumably I could get all three books that are available from Audible and still not get to the end of the story.
Although this was a pretty good story throughout, it wasn’t good enough to play this game and keep going with the series. I’m giving up.

Chick-lit. I should have guessed.
Revisado: 01-03-21
Three and a half hours into this 17-hour book and still nothing of note has happened, nor has a plot developed. So far all I’ve heard is the whining of a spoiled woman who doesn’t realize that her country is at war and occupied by the enemy. I was expecting some suspense and action, but none in the first eight chapters. This book is chick-lit and not for me.
Narrator Nancy Peterson did an excellent job. Too bad the story was disappointing.

Complicated story - Keep track of the characters.
Revisado: 06-17-20
Like the first book in this series this story is complicated. Unlike the first book, this time I wrote down the names of the characters in the book and was mostly able to keep things straight along the way.
In spite of knowing who a particular character is when he pops up again later I still had trouble following what was going on, why it was happening, and who was doing it. I’ll admit that I don’t sit down, close my eyes, and just listen to a book; I listen while I am doing something else that doesn’t require my full attention. Given my listening style, this book wasn’t really for me.
I’m pretty sure that all the loose ends got tied up at the end, but the plot and various sub-plots were so complicated that I’m not sure that I really understood who did what and why they did it. Even Shakespeare kept his plays to just two plots. Why should this book have so many? I have the next book in this series and I intend to listen to it, but I’m not buying any more of them.
Keeping track was exacerbated by the fact that during conversations I was unable to keep straight which character was talking. Even in a two-way conversation between a man and a woman Brick is unable to differentiate between the voices enough that it’s obvious who is speaking. He does read well, with emphasis in all the right places, but I wish he had made it easier to follow the dialogue.
Last, although this book has 101 chapters, Audible has decided to divide it into just 16 for the listener. That makes the average “chapter” about 55 minutes long. This is far too long to make it easy to locate a particular part that I might want to return to so I can hear it again. (Remember, I said it was a complicated story.) This is inconsistent with Audible’s other recordings I have where a book with 101 chapters would have 101 chapters in the audio file.

This is a difficult book to rate.
Revisado: 04-21-20
It’s hard to score this book. On one hand it is masterfully written and read with perfection. On the other hand it is a miserable story about a miserable family. I intended to give up on this book several times as the story descended farther and farther into misery, but it was so well done that I stuck with it to the end.
I listen to books for entertainment, or sometimes for an education, but I’m not interested in stories about how bad someone’s life is or about the bad decisions that person makes along the way. Not only did this book seem to move from one tragedy to the next, but it ended on a really pessimistic note. I say it ended, but actually the story just stopped; it didn’t really have an ending. I have no desire to listen to the next two books in this series which I intend to return, let alone the other 15 beyond those.

Beginning with opium, the “joy plant,” which has been used for 10,000 years, Thomas Hager tells a captivating story of medicine. His subjects include the largely forgotten female pioneer who introduced smallpox inoculation to Britain, the infamous knockout drops, the first antibiotic, which saved countless lives, the first antipsychotic, which helped empty public mental hospitals, Viagra, statins, and the new frontier of monoclonal antibodies. This is a deep, wide-ranging, and wildly entertaining book.

4-1/2 stars actually
Revisado: 01-24-20
This book was much better than I expected it to be. The history of the drug groups (sulfa, antibiotics, etc.) was made very interesting and the detailed information about each drug’s benefits as well as its undesirable side effects was excellent. I learned a lot, some of which applies to me. Narrator DiLoreto did a fine job.
I generally reserve my five star ratings for only the top 2-3% of books. This one wasn’t quite that good, but it definitely deserved better than four. If this subject interests you at all, this is a great book to get.
