What other book might you compare The Witching Hour to and why?

This has always been one of my favourite Anne Rice novels, and after being an Audible member for 10 years I'm SO happy that it has finally been released in the unabridged format.
The Lives of the Mayfair Witches does intertwine with the New Tales of the Vampires (Merrick and Blackwood Farm) but the fascinating history that she weaves in this novel can stand alone.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I especially enjoy the detailed family history when Rowan reads the Talamasca files on the Mayfair family.

Glazes over the Ripper murders; no satisfaction.

I bought this because I'm a fan of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories, I've always been curious about the Jack the Ripper murders and I really enjoy narrations by Simon Vance so I expected to really enjoy this book I found this to be rather unsatisfying - lots of Holmes clichés ("Elementary, my dear Watson!") thrown in to the point that it got annoying, but with none of the depth of the character that I love.

Without spoiling anything, I found the resolution to be unsatisfying. If you're a hardcore Sherlock Holmes fan or Ripperologist, stay clear but if you want a fast-paced mystery give this a shot.

This has always been my favourite novel from the Vampire Chronicles series (even though Interview with the Vampire is more popular) but I've always held off downloading it from Audible because it was only available abridged (aka butchered) but when this edition became available I downloaded this, Interview and Queen of the Damned immediately!

I've read the paperback edition of this book many times but Simon Vance narrates very well and captures the cheeky, elegant character of Lestat very well and brings out some subtleties that I've missed before.

This novel stands alone very well if you haven't read the other Anne Rice books since it only makes a few references to Interview with the Vampire.

I hope Audible will release more unabridged Anne Rice books (The Mayfair Witch novels!).

Interesting re-telling of the fairy tale.

I've read several of Gregory Maguire's books - Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, Wicked, Son of a Witch and A Lion Among Men. I enjoy his modern twists on well-known fairy tales and his overall writing styles. He always incorporates elements of the fairy tales and weaves them into a believable and thought-provoking plot.

This book has a nice flow, and I enjoyed it. I would have rated it 4 stars but John McDonough constantly mispronounces "Lucrezia" and "Cesare" and it drove me nuts.
