Historia
Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

I loved the characters, especially Vera. It’s a lovely book with such a sense of richness. I very much felt that I knew the tea shop, probably have visited it or passed by a thousand times. There is a beautiful sense of place developed.

Just as delightful as I remembered
Revisado: 06-15-23
This book was probably the first novel I reread as a child. My copy was worn and tattered. I loved Jo and longed to write and love and grow as the March family did. Revisiting the book, this time with new voices, I was transported to my youth. This is a refreshing take, and I wish now that Laura Dern would narrate more classics.

Delightful
Revisado: 05-31-23
This is peak cozy storytelling. The characters you’ll meet are warm and inviting, a reflection of the novel itself. The book reminds of “Legends & Lattes” — just as sweet and as LGBTQIA-friendly. And like that book, it reminds the reader that the true monsters we encounter are rarely the ones who hide under our beds.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Distracting narration
Revisado: 04-07-19
While I enjoyed the story a great deal, I found the narration difficult at times. Some of the voices — including the main character — sound *exactly* like Shaggy from “Scooby-Doo.”

Historia
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

Redemption runs deep
Revisado: 06-16-17
Anna LeBaron may be the daughter of a notorious polygamist and murderer, but she has come to understand Whose she really is. She is shaped by the horror and grief of her childhood, but she is gripped by the grace of a God who makes all things new. Listen as she discovers not only the true nature of her father but her own true identity.
Anna is a wonderful reader, drawing listeners into each moment and feeling.
Her story is powerful, and I found myself longing to protect the young Anna, only to realize that God had been with her all along.
Lon before I finished the book, I found myself recommending it friends and relatives who could identify with fatherlessness, with tragedy, and with a longing for healing. Anna's remarkable storytelling allows readers to journey with her toward hope.

These are the faces that call me "mom", the three children who made me a mother. When I started my journey into parenthood I never thought it would look like this. I never planned on having three adopted children, and I certainly never imagined that two of them would have Down syndrome. But like most of the things God does, once we stepped into the craziness and confusion of the unknown and unplanned, we quickly realized that we were indeed among the lucky few.

Beauty shines through
Revisado: 04-05-17
So much of this book was familiar to me and to our own story: the struggle and pain of infertility, the long road toward adoption, the beauty of community. I recommend it for anyone who has adopted, is considering it, or who loves someone on the journey. I also think it should be required reading for church and ministry leaders who want to grow into an inclusive church for people of all abilities and for adoptive families.
The Avis family adopted three kids, and each chapter shows the glory of God in each uniquely humbling and incredible situation. Listen as Heather Avis tells you about how big her God is, and how beautiful life can be when you say yes to Him.

Historia
This is a book about discovering what we really need. There are a lot of second-best options, but we weren't made to live a second-best life. Finding what we actually need is different than what we are often offered. There are many books full of opinions, steps and programs. This isn't one of them. This is about craving the things that matter. Things that don't just work, but last.

Tenderness and welcome
Revisado: 03-15-17
I don't think I've thought much about what "welcome" really means. Sweet Maria Goff embodies the notion, and every word in this book is proof. "Love Lives Here" is an invitation into relationship and community. It is a loving description of how the Goffs intentionally create safe spaces, warmth, and whimsy -- even in the most trying and painful of circumstances.
"Love Lives Here" works as both memoir and guidebook. The author models that intentionality by weaving memory with lessons learned. She explains her way forward. She doesn't simply arrive at conclusions, she shows her work.
While I have a printed copy of the book (supplied by the publisher), I chose to spend an Audible credit to listen to Maria tell her own story in her own voice. I am so glad that I did. Her speaks my voice is as warm and tender as the words she writes.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

The best book I heard this year
Revisado: 01-01-17
This book hit home for me in a thousand ways. We all have a lovable grump in our lives, and we all want the kind of love Ove shared with Sonya. I'd love to write more, but I'd give too much away. So I'll say this: By the end, I was wishing I were more like Ove myself. And I'll reread this again and again.
