Life happens in the quiet moments. The ordinary becomes revelatory in the right context, if only we pay attention. A very women-centric story of a mother/daughter pair- immigrant/American by birthright. But the men in the book suffer as mere caricature. Narration is so-so. 3.5/5 for me.

A welcome addition to the VN refugee experience literature

Going against the model minority myth, Eric presents a unique take on the Vietnamese boat refugee experience in America. It's a slow burn, and some of the characters feel less fully fleshed out. The narration is uneven. Ultimately much more is gained from the water than lost.

Sophomoric effort

After the brilliant Sympathizer, it was always going to be tough for a sequel to match. Viet Thanh draws us into 1980s Paris from the vantage of Vietnamese refugee gangsters. As before, morals, philosophy, politics, history and race super collide. It's about as uneven a premise as it sounds. Without a love interest & too long in the tooth in many sections, the meandering story stagnates. The narrator can barely make out the Vietnamese names, but is clearly fluent in French. You have to be committed to this world to see it through. Still looking forward to the author's next outing on the strength of Sympathizer.

Good intro into topic

Solid introduction to the topic. Some of the examples aren't the most compelling. Great teachers have a way of making us see in different ways, those 'aha' moments that this lacks. For those truly interested, a deeper dive is necessary.

Story takes awhile to get going. Strong performance. If you enjoyed this you might also like The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo, a Reese book selection w excellent pacing and mystery throughout.

Ending is a setup for sequel

Which is fine if expected beforehand, that there will be another audible e-book that will hopefully tie all the threads together. Otherwise performance was good and story entertaining enough for a short road trip. Just wish it was made clear this would be a series given the unsatisfying conclusion.
