fresh view of a recurring theme in Syfy
Revisado: 08-06-24
this project transhuman anthology was fantastic. it was a phenomenally fresh take on that recurring theme across generations of syfy writers: how can man use technology to extend life and eben possi ly achieve immortality. the twists and turns, the humanizing of mechanical beings with personality traits and talents by careful, rational blending of existing personalities to "create" new people from a limited set of archetypes? Brilliant! The introduction of an extinction level event at the cusp of making AI actually intelligent instead of just a parrot with options like we have today. Fantastic. the political intrigue of those just trying to be good "people" being used by secret, malevolent nefarious actors carrying out maliscious plots, all while other secret societies try to "save" extinct humanity through developing as of yet un discovered technologies.
fantastic listen. 10/10. I absolutely would watch the movie, but I think it would have to be made by robots in order to be worth watching.

Historia
Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

a good continuation
Revisado: 03-17-24
clearly, this is a sequel. sequels are never as good as the first. but for a sequel, it's OK. it gives a lot of body and depth to relate to the characters, introduces dilemmas, and even resolves some of them. leaves the reader/listener hoping to find out the resolution of the last few dilemmas in the next book.

Historia
With rare detail and in consummate style, Steve Inskeep tells the story of a couple whose joint ambitions and talents intertwined with those of the nascent United States itself. Taking advantage of expanding news media, aided by an increasingly literate public, the two linked their names to the three great national movements of the time - westward settlement, women’s rights, and opposition to slavery. Together, John and Jessie Frémont took parts in events that defined the country and gave rise to a new, more global America.

fantastic gripping story
Revisado: 04-16-23
Steve Inskeep writes a gripping and and almost fiction sounding story. This is a very well researched biography of one of our nations most influential and important historical figures. but the narration has many places where it skips and mid-sentence changes or stops.

fantastically narrated!
Revisado: 08-22-22
This is my first read brought to voice by Mr. Page, and I am supremely satisfied. I love the Gentlemen Bastards and he does an incomparable job bringing their story to life. As for the story: I own all three volumes in paperback. This, as are the other 2, is so well written, it might even be better than the Princess Bride, for all the same reasons. Warning: this is basically an R rated version of the Princess Bride, if one were to describe a plot badly.

fantastic continuation of Scadrial's story
Revisado: 06-16-22
In the original Mistborn trilogy, we start out thinking we are reading Kelsier's story, but it becomes clear once the story unfolds, especially at the end of book one, that it is not Kelsier's story; this story is much bigger tham one character. In book 2, we start to see that it is more the story of Kelsier's crew and how they both overthrow the Final Empire and build a Republic. Finally, with the Hero of Ages, we think the Mistborn series is about Vin, as the Hero of Ages. But she isn't the Hero of Ages; Harmony is.
In this (almost) conclusion of the second arc of the Mistborn series, we see that even though Mistborn (both the first and second series) is in great part Harmony's story, it is truly the story of Scadrial, told first through the eyes of Kelsier, Vin, Sazed, Spook, and the others in the Mistborn trilogy. Then continued through the eyes of Wax, Wayne, Marasi, and Steris in the Wax and Wayne quadrilogy. And in this third of four books, we finally start to see that Scadrial's story is a small perspective of the Cosmere's story. I don't know if it's the story of the Shards of Adonalsium, or if the Shards are just a small part of the Cosmere's story, but there is something looming over each of the worlds of the Cosmere, something tying each of the stories of thr various worlds in the Cosmere together. This book is the first glimpse that the struggles of Sel, Roshar, Nalthis, Scadrial, and all the other worlds we've seen is the same struggle, just each battle is part of a much greater war.
Or this was just a really enjoyable adventure book, and Brando Sando (and Michael Kramer!) has outdone himself again!
I've heard it both ways.

Historia
With The Alloy of Law, Brandon Sanderson surprised listeners with a New York Times best-selling spinoff of his Mistborn audiobooks, set after the action of the trilogy, in a period corresponding to late 19th-century America. The trilogy's heroes are now figures of myth and legend, even objects of religious veneration. They are succeeded by wonderful new characters, chief among them Waxillium Ladrian, known as Wax, hereditary lord of House Ladrian.

Wax and Wayne continue their progression towards becoming full-fledged members of the elite society of Elendel. Lots of drama and heartache, thrilling successes and wrenching defeats. Stunning revelations, and more secrets and lies. In all, the steampunk/fantasy world Brandon Sanderson has created here is as close to The Princess Bride as can be. Wayne is absolutely Fezzik. That is all

This continuation of the Mistorn series is amazing. Rich Worldbuilding, new characters, funny, smart, witty, and introspective dialog. Cohesive properties with political, religious, social, and physics rules already established, but +/- 300 years of development, and basically fantasy traditional in the wild west! what's not to love?! never knew fantasy needed six shooters but yet, here we are.

Revisado: 06-05-22
this was a great finale for the story arc. the characters and concept fully developed and concluded. it would have been even better had they said that this one included the first two novellas, so I wouldn't have bought those and then this one came out...oh well.
