the ending was plain stupid

the story has a lot of slow parts, especially at the beginning. but it picks up when the colony ship gets going.

the biggest problem is with the ending, and the poor planning of the "matriarch" and her plans.
why did her giant ship not come prepared to start a fresh colony of their own? they could not have known for sure that the first colony had survived.

it's a massive plot hole, seemingly created just to add some drama for the ending.

while presented as a logistics issue, on cause of the matriach's comically lack of prepeardness, the conflict could really have been of ideology alone, and still had an ending that amounted to the same outcome.

why needlessly make the matriarch a moron? it weekens her as an antagonist.

not the disappointment I feared, instead the perfection I hoped for.

Since this is the first story beyond the originally planned story arc, I had fears and hopes.
So far, this sequel series starts off with a book that could really make the top five of the series so far, if i ever made such a list that is.

keep up the good work. now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna give this book another listen.

I expected more story, less dry nonfic

While the book is intriguing, and the jokes do carry the book, I feel this book lacks a story, and there is a lot of potential for it.
you already have a named main character in the hypothetical colonist Astrid, and the problems and disasters she could face.
The story need not be the main focus, you might had even retold it (with different bad endings ) as you changed what Astrid would need to survive and thrive on Mars.

on par with the best parts of exp force

when the converge series began, i was sceptical. book one has such a dramatically changed setting (from exp force) it was hard to love it. and it had flaws. book two improved things, but i was still not convinced this would ever be as good as expeditionary force.

This third book did it. This series is going to work out just fine.

Still waiting for another big event like a peice of the bridge. i keep expecting it. but even so, this book leaves enough to keep me hooked every chapter. keep it up.

skip the first half

ok, dont acually do that. you'd lose vital context to some gags in the latter half. but it is my feeling on the matter,,that the first half, while not outright bad, felt a bit lacking. The story really picks up after the titular nautical adventure, when the crew returns to Windfall.

nah. that's a lie. 2/5, needs more coffee!
jokes asides, this book feels mostly grounded in reality. everything from the social and political issues, to the shortage of important goods like coffee.
it would not suprise if a major subplot of the next book is all about aquiering this very vital resource.

what is sentience, really?

like the previus book in the series, nothing makes sense at all untill the last few chapters.
But unlike the previus two books, this one also digs into the question of who and what are sentient, and what that means.

Philosophy students may recommended to read this book as a case study.

I expected one threat in the book. One last faceoff happening either just before or just after the current ending.

The Maxolhx and/or rindhalu learning that all sentinels were dead, then one again attacking earth. the large navy Earth had built up acually being used in a major defence effort.
Then Joe arrives, and utters the keyphrase. Fluffernutter. the battle ends as the elder weapon that we never saw get used, acually get used.
