Historia
Despite repeated warnings from the White House, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shocked the world. Why did Putin start the war—and why has it unfolded in previously unimaginable ways? Ukrainians have resisted a superior military; the West has united, while Russia grows increasingly isolated. Serhii Plokhy, a leading historian of Ukraine and the Cold War, offers a definitive account of this conflict, its origins, course, and the already apparent and possible future consequences.

Really Good

This book is informative, and still fairly timely. I enjoyed the non-partisan treatment of the subject-matter, and relevant history.

Historia
By July of 1944, the Third Reich's days were numbered. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, a general staff insider with open eyes (and access to the Fuhrer), was convinced that assassinating Hitler was the only way to prevent the destruction of the Fatherland and the deaths of millions. On July 20, he hid a bomb-stuffed briefcase at a high-level meeting. The explosion tore through the room, but a table leg spared Hitler from the blast. The result was a witch hunt, a wave of executions, and a further pointless year of war. Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh deliver an exhilarating and definitive portrait of the anti-Nazi movement (called "Secret Germany") that almost killed Hitler. Secret Germany is the story of "World War II's boldest plot-that-failed" (Time), a coup that was a moral and spiritual necessity.

This Author Salivates Over Wehrmacht Officers
Revisado: 03-15-25
Presuming that this book was not AI generated, the author has a seemingly, exceedingly high opinion of the genetically inferior, inbred Wehrmacht Officer Corps, thankfully incapable of not only winning a war, but also completing a seemingly easy task when you are standing next to Der Chubby, Diminutive Dictator. The prose of this probable work of fiction, fawn over the unnecessarily long surnames of Der Ignominious Bastarde, who are less deserving of praise than Wile E. Coyote!

Accessible to students, tourists, and general listeners alike, this book provides a broad overview of Russian history since the ninth century. Paul Bushkovitch emphasizes the enormous changes in the understanding of Russian history resulting from the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, new material has come to light on the history of the Soviet era, providing new conceptions of Russia's pre-revolutionary past.

Historia
The massive armies of the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies posed a huge threat to the nations of Western Europe. US military planners decided they needed a plan to slow the juggernaut they expected when and if a war began. The plan was Special Forces Berlin. Their mission, should hostilities commence, was to wreak havoc behind enemy lines and buy time for vastly outnumbered NATO forces to conduct a breakout from the city.

Snooze Fest
Revisado: 03-08-25
Satisfactorily written, and narrated, however was this history waiting to be told? I made it a quarter to a third of the way in, and the most compelling mission that was retold involved operators following an East German who dared to legally enter West Berlin for the day, had a beer, and returned home. If anything, this seems to lessen the reverence for the mission.

Historia
On August 5, 1942, giant pillars of dust rose over the Russian steppe, marking the advance of the 6th Army, an elite German combat unit dispatched by Hitler to capture the industrial city of Stalingrad and press on to the oil fields of Azerbaijan. The Germans were supremely confident; in three years, they had not suffered a single defeat. The Luftwaffe had already bombed the city into ruins. German soldiers hoped to complete their mission and be home in time for Christmas.

Sophomoric Narrative Style
Revisado: 12-07-24
While meticulously researched, cumbersome storytelling leaves listener feeling like lice-ridden Stalingrad captives. The book is about eight hours too long. The adaptation skips around in peripatetic manner. Narrator sounds hauntingly similar to a young Ronald Reagan. Narrator routinely had difficulty pronouncing commonplace words; oftentimes sounding like his dentures are falling out of his mouth, reminiscent of Sleepy Joe during ‘19 debate. I’m suspicious that it’s really an AI-chatbot.

Historia
In the U.S. Marine Corps, the most dangerous job in combat is that of the sniper. With no backup and little communication with the outside world, these men disappear for weeks on end in the wilderness with nothing but intellect and iron will to protect them - as they watch, wait, and finally strike. But of all of the snipers who ever hunted human prey, one man stands above the rest as the most legendary fighting man to ever pull a trigger. That man is Carlos Hathcock.

Historia
On June 22, 1941, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa, one of the turning points of World War II. Within six months, the invasion bogged down on the outskirts of Moscow, and the Eastern Front proved to be the decisive theater in the defeat of the Third Reich. Ever since, most historians have agreed that this was Hitler's gravest mistake. In Hitler's Great Gamble, James Ellman argues that while Barbarossa was a gamble and perverted by genocidal Nazi ideology, it was not doomed from the start.

Historia
The German invasion of Poland on 1 September, 1939, designated as Fall Weiss (Case White), was the event that sparked the outbreak of World War II in Europe. The campaign has widely been described as a textbook example of Blitzkrieg, but it was actually a fairly conventional campaign as the Wehrmacht was still learning how to use its new Panzers and dive-bombers. The Polish military is often misrepresented as hopelessly obsolete and outclassed by the Wehrmacht, yet in fact it was well-equipped with modern weapons and armor.

This “book” has zero narrative appeal
Revisado: 10-31-24
It seems like the drafter tricked a publisher into publishing his term-paper from Army War College. This work is the literary equivalent of a kaleidoscope through a firehose. The information is presented with less than surface-level analysis. There are countless names and places that I’d bet most Poles have never heard of, nor be interested in discovering, because the writer does not even attempt to endear the reader/listener to the facts spewed. This work is tantamount to listening to an auctioneer read a phone book, but less entertaining. Mr. Forczyk, while neither an author nor historian, as confirmed by his biography, seems to loathe this subject matter, as much as I disliked listening to his characterization of it!

Historia
Of the 30 million who fought in the eastern front of World War II, 8 million died, driven forward in suicidal charges, shattered by German shells and tanks. They were the men and women of the Red Army, a ragtag mass of soldiers who confronted Europe's most lethal fighting force and by 1945 had defeated it. Sixty years have passed since their epic triumph, but the heart and mind of Ivan - as the ordinary Russian soldier was called-remain a mystery. We know something about how the soldiers died, but nearly nothing about how they lived, how they saw the world, or why they fought.

Historia
With epic breadth and intimate detail, Ludmila Ulitskaya's remarkable work tells the story of three school friends who meet in Moscow in the 1950s and go on to embody the heroism, folly, compromise, and hope of the Soviet dissident experience. These three boys - an orphaned poet; a gifted, fragile pianist; and a budding photographer with a talent for collecting secrets - struggle to reach adulthood in a society where their heroes have been censored and exiled.

one of the main characters had to turn gay, like it was a Netflix or HBO original. No thanks! Somehow that was left out of the synopsis. Fortunately, this book was written more than ten years ago or else the three fictitious, male main characters would’ve HAD to change in the girls locker room because they were born liking to look at girls undress. Imagine that! I knew I should’ve made a non-fiction selection.
