Weird annoying voice effects.
Revisado: 08-29-24
There are weird voice effects like echo applied to the narration. Annoying and distracting. Gave it an hour, couldn't stand it.

Historia
Jake is working at the neighborhood market under his apartment when the world ends. He expected nuclear war, a computer virus, or even climate change burning everyone to a crisp to bring about the downfall of civilization. But cruel and arbitrary gods from another world? Who would have guessed that? When these cruel gods shuffled Earth like a deck of cards, nothing was in the same place anymore. Monsters, dungeons, and magical items appear scattered across the globe. And suddenly, everyone has access to a new, strange magical card system that gives them magical powers.

Abandons its own core concept
Revisado: 03-08-22
The first half or so was great with interesting card based game mechanics and charming characters building a community together. Then for some reason it abandons the cards and community almost entirely and moves into a bunch of generic cultivation-type meditation grinding with no rules or limits to make it interesting.
Otherwise a lot of great writing and characterization, just baffling that the author took such a promising story and forced it onto a completely different course halfway through.

Narrator needs help
Revisado: 11-21-21
Raphtalia's voice throughout the book ranges from bad to awful. Everything else is fine. Dual narrators would be a good plan for the next one, otherwise the current narrator needs a lot of practice because the series isn't going to run out of young girls who need to not sound terrible.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

The Wil Wheaton version is garbage
Revisado: 01-23-20
I bought this when it was narrated by RC Bray and it was phenomenal. Now I find that at some point they replaced it with an awful version by Wil Wheaton who is a terrible audiobook narrator. I tried listening to Ready Player One and Wil Wheaton's narration was so bad that I returned it a quarter of the way through. I will never buy a book narrated by him until he learns how to make one character sound different from another. It seems like I can still download the version I had by RC Bray but it's awful that new listeners will have to put up with this version.
