Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

Great potential, but failed to deliver.
Revisado: 03-07-24
I can tell by the stats that I'm in the minority opinion about this book.
For me this book seemed to skim the surface of the events that were going on at the time. There were some very real and serious events that the book covered, and yet the overall impression I had about the book could be summed in by my response to my husband. He has heard bits of the book as I listened, and asked if he should add it to his list. I said not to bother, that it didn't really climb out of the the "chic-lit" category.

When Boady Sanden first receives the case of Elijah Matthews, he’s certain there’s not much he can do. Elijah, who believes himself to be a prophet, has been locked up in a psychiatric hospital for the past four years, convicted of brutally murdering the pastor of a megachurch. But as a law professor working for the Innocence Project, Boady agrees to look into Elijah’s file. When he does, he is alarmed to find threads that lead back to the death of his colleague and friend, Ben Pruitt, a man shot to death four years earlier in Boady’s own home.

Treacle with sugar on top
Revisado: 09-28-23
If this were my first Eskens book, it would also be my last. I enjoy the author enough to have pre-ordered this title, but this one didn't work for me. Plus the narration was awful. Way overdone, and having different narrators for the women characters, overdone too. The over dramatic narration only increased the nausea of over the over-sweet story. I'll be more cautious if a title of his comes up again.

Tedious
Revisado: 10-18-22
I don't expect a great piece of literature from this series, but I do want to be interested and engaged in the story. Without any spoilers, the concept of this mystery seemed to be more than a bit of a stretch in concept than was acceptable. But the real deal breaker was the long internet "dialogs". In a printed format I could have skipped over all of the to: and from: and re: internet addresses and just read the text. But in the audible formant one goes through the endless string of recipients to get to WTF! and repeats to get an OMG! Perhaps the authoress had an agenda that wanted to stress the lack of real content in these kind of "conversations"? But I get that already. Because I've been following this series so far.... I will probably give the next one a listen. But this one just didn't cut it.

Quite the slog
Revisado: 09-07-21
After Mystic River, I was really looking forward to this.
But I was disappointed. I never got engaged with the actual characters. They always seemed to remain 2 dimensional. They never became real to me.
Then the untold ending of all the surviving protagonists heading to the historical race massacre in Tulsa???
The narration wasn't bad, but the musical interludes???? Pointless and very disrupting.

Wow! What tripe!
Revisado: 06-11-19
I recognized the author's name, but now I know to avoid any further work of his. I found the story pushing credibility, but that would have been OK, except I found the characters sophomoric. They displayed the maturity of teenages, and the cliches in thoughts and actions just never quit! The narration I found to anover-emotive, filled with soap opera dramatics which certainly didn't help my enjoyment. I will avoid not only James Patterson, but January LaVoy and Kevin Collins. Obviously, there are a lot of good reviews out there, but my money was wasted on this one.... Live and learn.

Not my style. Insipid chick lit. Narrator was over emotive. Too bad I've had it for a couple of years, or else I would return this POS.
