Beautiful, thoughtful and engaging novel
Revisado: 03-28-25
I have enjoyed all of WKK’s work, but this was by far my favorite. The characters are wonderful and beautifully developed. The story is very engaging and thoughtfully told. As always, the narration is perfect.

Historia
Hana Babic is a quiet middle-aged librarian in Minnesota who wants nothing more than to be left alone. But when a detective arrives with the news that her best friend has been murdered, Hana knows that something evil has come for her, a dark remnant of the past she and her friend had shared. Thirty years before, Hana was someone else: Nura Divjak, a teenager growing up in the mountains of war-torn Bosnia—until Serbian soldiers arrived to slaughter her entire family before her eyes. The events of that day thrust Nura into the war, leading her to join a band of militia fighters.

Disappointed
Revisado: 03-01-25
I’ve really loved all of Allen Esken’s previous novels and was excited to listen to this one. This one seemed to try to take on way too much in way too little space. The switching between the main character’s tragic experiences during the Bosnian war and a present day murder mystery gave short shrift to both story lines. Perhaps I would have enjoyed the book more had I read instead of listened to it. The narrator delivered a monotone reading which caused me to repeatedly lose interest.

A beautiful story of wonderful characters who find joy in kindness
Revisado: 12-04-24
In a time in the US where the political climate Is focussed on bitter anger devoid of compassion, this book hit the spot. Perfect for refocussing away from the prevailing selfish mindset in the US.

Solid story and mystery but teen dialogue and overall performance lacking
Revisado: 11-03-24
I always enjoys Kevin O’Brien’s mysteries. I found this book good but not my favorite. My real problem was that the teen dialogue was very dated - anyone who’s spoken with a teen in the last 20 years will notice this. Also, I find the narrator difficult to listen to. His voicing of women and teens is, on my opinion, horrible.

Good story but narration ill-suited
Revisado: 06-30-24
I recently read the first two books in this series. I think I liked the first the best. I did enjoy this story but thought Whoopi Goldberg’s narration was very poorly suited. Her New York accent was wrong for a story in set in the south and I thought was both too harsh and not varied enough for the characters.

Lovely feel good well -written novel
Revisado: 06-07-24
I have loved every book by this author. I have been an attorney for many years and am always dealing with a lot of stressful situations with people (understandably) at their very worst. Hazel Prior’s books always recenter me and inspire me to appreciate the good in people. Sounds sappy but true. Please keep on writing Ms. Prior!!!

Very slow until last several chapters
Revisado: 03-27-24
I love most of Tana French’s novels, and liked the first Det, Cooper book. This book was just okay for me. I enjoyed the characters and the story was quite good. However, I found most of the story excruciatingly slow. I do hope she writes another Cooper book because I now feel invested in the characters and hope the next book can spend less time on character development and more on the story.

Beautiful story from beginning through the end
Revisado: 02-23-24
I loved everything about this book and disliked nothing. The author’s narration was perfect. I read Night of Miracles first, not realizing it was part of a series. I mentioned how much I liked the book to a friend, who told me to read this book. I am going to read Night of Miracles again now. These books are perfect for self reflection and reevaluation of life goals and purpose - something I needed right now and that I believe we all need sometimes.

Slow and confusing
Revisado: 02-19-24
I enjoyed the Sanatorium, so was looking forward to this book. It started slowly but I kept with it hoping that I would become more engaged. I did not, but I still listened to the entire book. It was too slow moving throughout with too many characters, none of which seemed to react believably to the shocking events taking place. I also don’t think the narrator did the book any favors insofar as her reading pace and inflection did not vary much at all - very pleasant voice but sort of sleepy throughout. Sorry, but I dis not enjoy and would not recommend.
