Historia
Between 1993 and 2000, a series of groundbreaking experiments revealed dramatic evidence of a web of energy that connects everything in our lives and our world - the Divine Matrix. From the healing of our bodies, to the success of our careers, relationships, and the peace between nations, this new evidence demonstrates that we each hold the power to speak directly to the force that links all of creation.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

TOO LONG- like running your fingernails down a chalkboard!
Revisado: 12-05-19
OMG! This book was disappointing on many levels. The only reason I stuck w it is bc I read a review that talked about the ending and that inspired me to power through.
The first third of the book was good, the middle third was unbearable and the final third was just OK. At first I really enjoyed Tom Hanks narrating but by the end I couldn’t stand him. It will take me a year bf I can go to one of his movies. I really got tired of the cadence he used for the narration.
This book could’ve been a lot better. I loved Commonwealth. I have to admit I couldn’t get through State of Wonder. So, maybe I’m not a match for her writing style. I just felt so sorry for Danny. What a blah, boring life he had and it never got any better.

If you’re interested in this slice of English history, you will like this book. It has peaked my interest to learn more about Margaret d’Anjou. I have to say, Gregory has written better historical fiction. I’ve probably either listened to or read almost all of her books.

Nora and Theresa Flynn are 21 and 17 when they leave their small village in Ireland and journey to America. Nora is the responsible sister; she's shy and serious and engaged to a man she isn't sure that she loves. Theresa is gregarious; she is thrilled by their new life in Boston and besotted with the fashionable dresses and dance halls on Dudley Street. But when Theresa ends up pregnant, Nora is forced to come up with a plan - a decision with repercussions they are both far too young to understand.

Insightful take on the lives of American women in the late 20th century.
Revisado: 09-13-18
I really enjoyed this book. I can understand why one reviewer said it was tedious. But it really wasn’t. Many families of catholic, european descent living in America in the mid to late 20th century lived the lives of the characters in this book. The struggles and consequences would be found somewhere in every family and I don’t know why but I took great comfort in knowing that. I know this family. It’s my family and it’s your family. It you like that kind of book, go for it.

Historia
In Super Bowl XLIX, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll made one of the most controversial calls in football history: With 26 seconds remaining, and trailing by four at the Patriots' one-yard line, he called for a pass instead of a handing off to his star running back. The pass was intercepted, and the Seahawks lost. Critics called it the dumbest play in history. But was the call really that bad? Or did Carroll actually make a great move that was ruined by bad luck? Even the best decision doesn't yield the best outcome every time.

Interesting perspective
Revisado: 04-27-18
This is an interesting perspective on the decision making process. I now feel like I need a workbook to practice working through decisions before I do it in the real world. Or, maybe I should start playing poker!
Definitely worth a listen.

Historia
Frances Stroh's earliest memories are ones of great privilege: shopping trips to London and New York, lunches served by black-tied waiters at the Regency Hotel, and a house filled with precious antiques, which she was forbidden to touch. Established in Detroit in 1850, by 1984 the Stroh Brewing Company had become the largest private beer fortune in America and a brand emblematic of the American dream itself; while Stroh was coming of age, the Stroh family fortune was estimated to be worth $700 million.

“Shirtsleeve to shirtsleeves in 3 generations “
Revisado: 02-25-18
Although I believe it took the Strohs 5 generations, this is an accurate portrayal of how families get wealthy and blow it through no ones fault but their own.
I won’t criticize her writing skills bc I give the author a lot of credit for publishing this first hand account of the fall of Stroh beer.
If your an estate lawyer you will find this book very fascinating as a tale for your wealthy clients with family owned businesses.
Things may have turned out differently if the siblings has brought their own counsel to that fateful meeting in the trust attorneys office. The trust attorney was representing the trust, not them.
Nevertheless, I wish the author and her siblings well.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Historia
The stories in Fresh Complaint explore equally rich—and intriguing—territory. Ranging from the bitingly reproductive antics of “Baster” to the dreamy, moving account of a young traveler’s search for enlightenment in “Air Mail” (selected by Annie Proulx for Best American Short Stories), this collection presents characters in the midst of personal and national emergencies. We meet a failed poet who, envious of other people’s wealth during the real-estate bubble, becomes an embezzler; a clavichordist whose dreams of art founder under the obligations of marriage and fatherhood.

Revisado: 11-13-17
Middlesexand and The Marriage Plot we’re excellent books. So, with that I mind, I️ thought I’d try Fresh Complaint. I️ had to return it. Maybe I’m getting old and I’ve always been a bit of a prude, but I️ just couldn’t take the delving into detail talk of bodily fluids. I️ listened to the first three stories and was a few minutes into the fourth, when up came more bodily fluid discussion. I️ couldn’t take it and had to let it go. So, let the buyer beware! The stories were interesting, but the bodily fluid descriptions ruined them for me.

Very informative
Revisado: 07-25-17
There is a lot of good information in this book. The narration is great. As a layperson, it may have been a little science heavy, but I understand that he needed to lay the foundation for his hypothesis.
Overall it was great and very motivating as I feel like I can "break the code".

Full of twists and turns
Revisado: 04-26-17
Just when you think you have it figured out, you don't! This was a great story and very enlightening as far as what happened during the London Blitz. I had no idea it went on for 57 days and the degree of devastation described was horrendous.
It started to drag on a little at the end. It actually would have been better if she went a little deeper instead of trying to tie it up. Gwen, Mac, Tom and Simon could all have been given more time. I didn't like the Julia Letters. I thought that part was somewhat boring.
But, overall, a great story and worth the time.
