what a performance! and what an intriguing and exciting new way to experience history through the eyes of the supporting character to the story.

I could not even finish this book -- it made me sick moment to moment. What the characters did, how they spoke, and the actors who narrated this for all of us to hear left me never wanting to read or hear this read again.

While a sad story, it was well written and I'm a sucker for a narrator with an Irish accent telling the story of a an Irish character.

Not a single unnecessary word. Like a poem of sadness and resurrection, telling a story of a man making the choice that was made for him. Finally finding joy and saving a life.

If you are familiar with this amazing writer, you will alresdy know that her stories are always tinged with darkness and revelation -- exploring life, death, religion, race and southern culture.

This is no different.

Be prepared for a journey through hell and hope.

The performance is spot-on.

I found the scientific information about the octopuses very fascinating. The philosophical and historical considerations as well. But I found all of the side stories *very* distracting. And not all that interesting.

I am disappointed that I didn't enjoy this given the great reviews. I was SO bored, like I was stuck in someone's mind I didn't want to know existed let alone inhabit. I thought the first story was interesting, but dragged; the second I suffered through; by the third I couldn't keep going. Life is too short and my list of books too long.

caveat: I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi. But I've enjoyed some, but definitely not this.

Having read multiple translations of the Book of Job, and reveled in its poetic mastery, I was very disappointed to hear a version that is so fabricated and far from the original. Mitchell's version is lively and the performance is captivating, but this version loses much of the eloquence of the original poetry.

As a reviewer in the 1987 New York Times Book Review said, "I don't think that ''God damn the day I was born'' is as good as ''Let the day perish,'' and I prefer the horse that says ''Ha, ha!'' among the trumpets to the somehow less exultant one that says ''Ah!''"

But if you don't take issue with how far from a literal translation it is you'll probably enjoy this book. I did. it just wasn't what I'd hoped for.

"And so, because, at the end, we all go back to the beginning.., because after more than 60 years my mind is back in that place among those people from whom I took the lesson of how to be a fully alive human being, I will carry on here, carry on through the electric pulses of this machine to tell the one story we all have, the one we'd lived."
