Ronan offers such great human insight and has such vast patience. I fear most people would have gotten fed up half way through this process, but he perseveres. I suspect he provided the closest thing to therapy this woman will ever experience which is how/why she finally began to reflect and acknowledge some hard truths. I think some people truly lack the understanding of the Johari window of self reflection and awareness and are stuck in their own narcissistic ways and never mature past that.
It’s no surprise that a former beauty queen would have those tendencies.

I do wish two specific things would have been better described. I lack a clear picture of what Ceecee looks like both now and in the past. Sarina mentioned a comment where someone said she looked like a mini Ceecee, so maybe she has blond hair and blue eyes and is thin?

I also would have enjoyed more of a portrait of what Ceecee ‘s family relationships were like. What did she say about her parents relationship and their affection or lack thereof towards her? Did her parents have addiction or abuse issues? What were their politics like?

The actual story was great, but it was pretty difficult as an audiobook to take in. The story would actually make a lot more sense as a series on television because of the flashbacks.

There were a lot of characters and sadly because there are so many of them, I don’t think any of the characters were as developed as they could be. I would have rather delved deeper into the complexity of characters like TJ, Barbara, Alice, or even Judyta as people. In a series of books or shows that could be flushed out more. In the book, the author focuses much more on everyone’s motivations with unequal attention to the backstory and feelings of each character. Any of these stories would be a good one if told from any of their perspectives. Instead, perspective was lost in the story and while I left satisfied I was not particularly invested in anyone.

In listening, I felt detached, as if reading a magazine article rather than a book.

I really enjoy the Dan Riley series and I’m drawn to his character. The stories will be liked by fans of John Sanford. I wish there was a spinoff from a female protagonist perspective rather than the women asking Dan what do we do and submissively taking cues from him irrespective of their position in his life all of the time, but the stories are engaging and interesting. There are always a bit of a long buildup in Weatherly’s writings which can initially lead to boredom wondering what one story has to do with another plot line, but if you stick with it you’re rewarded with action about 1/3 of the way through and the story picks up from there. I find I’m most interested in Dan’s life though and in the interest of continuity I do wish the series would start more with context about where we are in his life since the last book from the beginning, although I would imagine the style of writing does make it easier for a reader to pick up book 4 and not feel they have missed much by not starting from book 1. This would make a great Limited Series on Netflix.

Captivating stories from Noah’s childhood in South Africa

Wow. I had one impression of the likable friendly Noah from The Daily Sho2, and then after hearing his story I have another. The stories in this book deal with apartheid, racial discrimination, and domestic violence and it is as much a tribute to the human spirit as to his mother. Noah clearly has a way with words that transcends social and cultural barriers and he immediately draws you in as if you’re old friends—sitting in the same room having tea. Read the book...you will be better for it.
