It took me a while to understand and appreciate the style that this was written in. It isn’t the traditional formula for a novel, but developing a world full of humor and nuance that lays the foundation for great storytelling in the future. by itself, this one is a fun ride. The narrator is amazing and brings all the characters to life. She’s really a top tier quality narrator. I’ll be promoting this one to my lit rpg groups.

This one is very different than the previous books. It feels like our morbid monster troupe have grown into more divinely heartfelt beings. The beautiful song that Annie sang was also proof that our MC wasn’t just pretending to feel the interpersonal emotional connection, but that true bonds were being made.
The previous books defined a lot of what it meant to be a monster. This one bridges the monster to humanity- both the horrors and the beauty. I’m not used to finding such sentiment in this setting, but that’s likely why it stands out do gloriously.
I fell in love with our red-haired ...addition to the cast, felt the pains that we’re supposed to be nothing more than imitation.

The crime at the beginning of the previous book- which set the events of this book into motion is unforgivable in any way I can think of. It made it difficult to care about the well being of the MC. Half the book, I just wanted her to die horribly. But- if you can forgive, you should forgive. it clears the path into the future, and if the MC of the first book can forgive the MC of the second book, I’ll try to accept it.

As for the narrator- I can’t get tired of listening to her. That voice .. mmm

As with the first book, this one could also use more character development. If you have trouble remembering names, the characters easily blend together. No one seems to have a sense of humor- except the cheerleading fairy. A little more levity could give a great story a lot more depth.

A lot of the story is sort of grim- not in that people die a lot or are forced to ignore the natural human motivations in favor of mere survival, but more in the sense that each main player in the tale is confronted by their own pain, emotional handicap, or insecurity. It doesn’t dell on hopelessness, however, but the battle against these adversaries that plagued our stars from the first installment in the series. While taking the journey with these friends, I sometimes got the feeling that they were being abandoned, or at least overshadowed. This may have been the authors intent- as neglect played a role in the pain of most characters in some degree. When resolution was addressed with situations, the author faithfully embraced these characters- adding extra relief from the dread that they would be left behind (for example- a shopkeeper, from the beginning of the first book). I would only warn anyone new to this series that there are more books connected to this universe, so the arrival of characters that hadn’t been present before in the series may be disorienting. The loose ends that are tied up here extend beyond this series, addressing the Lewd Saga universe as a whole. ...and the epilogue? That was a nice cherry on top.

I took the journey with the characters of the first book, grew to care about them, felt their pain and celebrated their glory. About 2/3 through this book, however, the author apparently decided to abandon them for some characters from some other place that randomly appeared. MY characters spent the remainder of the book suffering with very little attention while these other jerks hijack the book I was into- especially since they’re far into whatever story they were dealing with. Suddenly I’m supposed to care about some vampire lord, a burnt forest, Lance and the self-centered Sonia as if they had any connection to the story that this book was originally about. WTF? Was this intended to be a practical joke. Edric lost his love (how did the trolls know she was his love - so that they would use her as leverage in the first place?) and the author just points at some other people as a distraction. I was connected to the original characters. When the author abandoned them, she abandoned me with them.

Some stories are easier than others to put yourself in the settings. This story opened that door and made falling into it easy. It had an epic feel to it, spanning over subjective decades. As much fun as the romances in other litrpgs are (I do enjoy them) this was a breath of fresh air (double meaning intended) that it stayed on course with a different direction. make the most of your life, do something adventurous. I’ll be eager for the next installment. One point where this could be stronger is in its character development, but anywhere this aspect finds is weak (not terribly weak at all) is overcome by the great narration staff.

Does Gibson really read these reviews? Anyway, It was great how he addressed complaints about the previous books- how everything goes the MC’s way, but then smacks the complainers in the face with (no spoilers) how things turn out. These books really are brilliant, incorporating the 4th wall as part of the story without breaking character. He breaks literary rules constantly, but without the detriment that the rules say should follow. Hey, if you are reading this, Gibson- please kill me in the next book!

I had no idea what to expect when I picked this one. The narrator did a great job on another story, which is how I found my way here. Too many people want to grade works like this based on self-righteous causes. They complain about there not being enough women, not diverse enough, not progressive enough for their endorsement. There are times for such battles, and times to take a break from shoving sanctimonious pride into everything. “Reality” doesn’t care about such things. It has it at times, it doesn’t at other times. This book rides that line in the same way. it’s not always pretty, but it it convincing. The pieces of the puzzle of Alice’s life start to come together in a way that grasps for hope and cheers when the underdog rises above the circumstances they’re placed in. Every interaction carries the risk of betrayal: the elf girl, the spy, the traitorous uncle. The payoff for taking chances leads to more opportunity and enduring friendships. This book is cerebral as much as it is emotional. Both aspects are potently displayed. If you leave your expectations aside and take this journey with Alice with an open heart, it’s well worthwhile. I can’t wait fir the next book.

This is one of those stories that could easily break out into other storytelling methods. I’m glad to be able to say I was here to witness it when Lucia Fluffytail first arrived in the public spotlight. It’s a story with incredible depth of soul and full of humor, and although violence and the insinuation of lewdness is present, unless you are repelled by these details- they have a way of contrasting and complementing the spirit of the book that further add to its depth, the way light scratches on a windshield don’t obstruct your view but provide a point of reference- just enough to make it clear what’s immediately in front of you. This book is for almost anyone. It’s light enough to be easily followed, but has such depth that can keep your mind occupied. On top of everything, Mare’s performance deserves an award. I have a couple hundred titles in my library, but this is the first one that I can say was really touching. From extreme exhilaration to deep despair, it was powerful enough that suspension of disbelief took no effort at all.
