Historia
Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill, offers a complete history of World War II. It began with the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. By the time it came to an end on V-Day - August 14, 1945 - it had involved every major power, and had become global in its reach. In the final accounting, it would turn out to be - in both human terms and material resources - the costliest war in history, taking the lives of forty-six million people.

The depth of information in this is immense…
Revisado: 03-12-24
The narrative is simple…not like some audio books. The information is extensive and deep. I have listened to dozens of books about WWII but this book covers almost every theatre is immense depth. The facts and figures are fascinating. The isolated stories told throughout should be separated and made into books themselves.
I throughly enjoyed this but I am on my way to becoming a WWII Historian for the future generations.
Well done to the author for the depth of research.

Historia
Elliot Carlson's biography of Captain Joe Rochefort is the first to be written of the officer who headed the U.S. Navy's decrypt unit at Pearl Harbor and broke the Japanese Navy's code before the Battle of Midway. Listeners will share Rochefort's frustrations as he searches in vain for Yamamoto's fleet prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and share his joy when he succeeds in tracking the fleet in early 1942 and breaks the code that leads him to believe Yamamoto's invasion target is Midway.

After watching the 2019 movie Midway…I became intrigued by the behind the scenes footage where they codebreaking was talked about. Edward Layton’s book is next up. This topic is very interesting considering how primitive radio communications were during WWII.

Historia
Victory and defeat, love and loss are the prevalent realities of Letters from the Greatest Generation, a remarkable and frank collection of World War II letters penned by American men and women serving overseas. Here, the hopes and dreams of the greatest generation fill each minute, and their voices ring loud and clear. "It's all part of the game. But it's bloody and rough," wrote one soldier to his wife. "Wearing two stripes now and proud as an old cat with five kittens," marked another.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

Historia
On the night of June 13th, 1944, a 12-man SAS unit parachuted into occupied France. Their objective: hit German forces deep behind the lines, cutting the rail-tracks linking Central France to the northern coastline. In a country crawling with enemy troops, their mission was to prevent Hitler from rushing his Panzer divisions to the D-Day beaches and driving the Allied troops back into the sea. It was a Herculean task, but no risk was deemed too great to stop the Nazi assault.

Nice listen
Revisado: 09-16-22
I enjoy anything I can read or listen to about the Major.
I’ve heard most of this before but it never gets old.
My only criticism is…if you are gonna be asked, or given the privilege to narrate a book about such an amazing man. Do your homework on how to pronounce the names of people and places important to the telling. The pronunciation was atrocious. This of us that read constantly about WWII are very familiar with the correct pronunciation of the names and places.
Sorry for the harsh criticism of that but it ruined the work put into the collection of writings and information in the book.

Historia
Since World War II, the American public has become fully aware of the exploits of the 101st Airborne Division, the paratroopers who led the Allied invasions into Nazi-held Europe. But within the ranks of the 101st, a sub-unit attained legendary status at the time, its reputation persisting among veterans over the decades. Primarily products of the Dustbowl and the Depression, the Filthy13 grew notorious, even within the ranks of the elite 101st. Never ones to salute an officer, or take a bath, this squad became singular within the Screaming Eagles.

It’s like you are there…
Revisado: 08-28-22
This book is very well done in a timeline that will entertain both the curious reader or most hardened historians. The accounts from such a vast array of people that were on the island that day really put you in amongst them. This book is more of a walk thru the Attack rather then a story of the attack.
Walter Lord is a great author and shows it again in this telling.
Thank you Sir.

Historia
Narrated by Emmy Award–winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home—part of the Greatest Generation—who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts: the rationing of meat, dairy products, and sugar; an explosion of war-related jobs; and, despite mixed signals, a greater role for women working outside the home.
