don't like when produced like a play
Revisado: 04-15-21
I should have reviewed this more thoroughly before buying. not a fan of the book being performed versus read. also no chapters, just the 6 hours of production. several times my place was lost due to.my phone in my pocket while doing my daily walk. very difficult to find place last listened to without chapters.

Historia
"The Lottery," one of the most terrifying stories of the twentieth century, created a sensation when it was first published in the New Yorker. "Powerful and haunting," and "nights of unrest" were typical reader responses. This collection, the only one to appear during Jackson's lifetime, unites "The Lottery" with 24 equally unusual stories. Together they demonstrate her remarkable range - from the hilarious to the truly horrible - and power as a storyteller.

short stories not my thing
Revisado: 04-03-21
not sure how this book got recommended to me ad I don't generally like short stories but this book got good reviews.
I have confirmed after sticking to the end that I do not like short stories. they end with no point and seemingly half way through the story. I like conclusions!
and stories should have a point at the end.

Historia
Three interlocking tales each feature a different protagonist, a state legislator, a junior senator, and the governor's press secretary, and illuminate the figure of Arthur "Goddam" Fenstemaker, a master politician and the governor of Texas. Considered a ruthless, exuberant politician, Fenstemaker works for the ultimate good of the people, even though he often employs questionable methods.

I live politics but there was no point. wrapping the three books together did not tie them together. I realize the author did not intend for the 3 stories to be one but making them one limited the impact

Historia
A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism. After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Führer and was hanged in Flossenbürg concentration camp at age thirty-nine. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the twentieth century.

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war - and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

Historia
Based on a series of letters Mark Twain wrote from Europe to newspapers in San Francisco and New York as a roving correspondent, The Innocents Abroad is a burlesque of the sentimental travel books popular in the mid-19th century. Twain's fresh and humorous perspective on hallowed European landmarks lacked reverence for the past.

Spanning the years 1940 to 1965, Defender of the Realm, the third volume of William Manchester’s The Last Lion, picks up shortly after Winston Churchill became prime minister - when his tiny island nation stood alone against the overwhelming might of Nazi Germany. The Churchill portrayed by Manchester and Reid is a man of indomitable courage, lightning-fast intellect, and an irresistible will to action.

The Brothers Karamazov tells the stirring tale of four brothers: the pleasure-seeking, impatient Dmitri; the brilliant and morose Ivan; the gentle, loving, and honest Alyosha; and the illegitimate Smerdyakov: shy, silent, and cruel. The four unite in the murder of one of literature's most despicable characters - their father. This was Dostoevsky's final and best work.

Historia
Caesar Augustus has been called history's greatest emperor. It was said he found Rome made of clay and left it made of marble. With a senator for a father and Julius Caesar for a great-uncle, he ascended the ranks of Roman society with breathtaking speed. His courage in battle is still questioned yet his political savvy was second to none. He had a lifelong rival in Mark Antony and a 51-year companion in his wife, Livia. And his influence extended perhaps further than that of any ruler who has ever lived.

After watching Rome on TV, wanted to learn more about what happened after Julius Ceaser. This book provided that follow up in an entertaining and thoroigh fashion. Sometime non-fictin can be tedious as a listen, but this book moved along and was read very well.

Historia
One of the 20th century's most challenging novels of ideas, The Fountainhead champions the cause of individualism through the story of a gifted young architect who defies the tyranny of conventional public opinion. The struggle for personal integrity in a world that values conformity above creativity is powerfully illustrated through three characters: Howard Roarke, a genius; Gail Wynand, a newspaper mogul and self-made millionaire; and Dominique Francon, a devastating beauty.

I read this after listening to Atlas Shrugged. I work with architects and found this to be very enjoyable. It helps if you agree with Ayn Rand's political viewpoint as well.
