Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Brutally self-conscious writing ...
Revisado: 07-01-22
The Metro-sarcastic reading feels like it's faithful to the lazy, over-confident writing. Disappointing after the greater realism of The Martian. Space MacGyver needs to feel a bit more 'desperate' rather than smugly Nerdy to engage the reader.

Historia
In the 23rd century, pioneers have escaped the crowded earth for life in self-sustaining orbital colonies. One of the colonies, Rotor, has broken away from the solar system to create its own renegade utopia around an unknown red star two light-years from Earth: a star named Nemesis. Now a 15-year-old Rotorian girl has learned of the dire threat that nemesis poses to Earth’s people - but she is prevented from warning them. Soon, she will realize that Nemesis endangers Rotor as well.

Nonsense
Revisado: 02-20-21
Cashing in on a great name, this story sounds like it was written in the 50's and has no redeeming features when compared to writers like Banks ... I can't finish this story because I don't care what happens and I'd rather not listen to this Performer trudge through this mud.

Soft porn ... some character development but generally lacking in direction or purpose ... the performance is awful and life is too short ... next!

Historia
Six million years ago, at the very dawn of the starfaring era, Abigail Gentian fractured herself into a thousand male and female clones: the shatterlings. Sent out into the galaxy, these shatterlings have stood aloof as they document the rise and fall of countless human empires. They meet every 200,000 years to exchange news and memories of their travels with their siblings.

Good ideas poorly executed and lazily performed ..
Revisado: 10-19-20
A space drama that is light on science and short on excitement. The dialogue is unrealistic and the reading becomes dreary.

Historia
For short-lived races like humans, space is dominated by the complicated, grandiose Mercatoria. To the Dwellers who may live billions of years, the galaxy consists of their gas-giant planets - the rest is debris. Fassin Taak is a Slow Seer privileged to work with the Dwellers of the gas-giant Nasqueron. His work consists of rummaging for data in their vast, disorganised memories and libraries. Unfortunately, without knowing it, he's come close to an ancient secret of unimaginable importance.

One of the best Culture Books ...
Revisado: 01-03-18
Banks again plucks at the fibers connecting the deeply personal with the widely galactic. One of my favorite books in the Culture universe.
The performance quickly becomes invisible, which is the desired effect.

Historia
The Scavenger species are circling. It is, truly, provably, the End Days for the Gzilt civilization. An ancient people, organized on military principles and yet almost perversely peaceful, the Gzilt helped set up the Culture 10,000 years earlier and were very nearly one of its founding societies, deciding not to join only at the last moment. Now they've made the collective decision to follow the well-trodden path of millions of other civilizations; they are going to Sublime, elevating themselves to a new and almost infinitely more rich and complex existence.

The lazy humour of a man at rest ...
Revisado: 12-07-17
Zakalwe would not be impressed. As an opportunity to seriously grapple with the implications and practicalities of the road to Sublimation, the book feels more like a movie script. Banks remains my favorite author, but there are better books preceding this offering.
Peter Kenny may be the best I've ever heard, reading a book out loud, but don't tell my father that.

Historia
Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.
