Historia
When sixteen-year-old Cindra Zoeller is sent to a reform camp in Montana after being involved in an armed robbery, she is thrust into a world of mountains and cowboys and prayers and miscreants and people from all walks of life like she’s never seen in suburban Massachusetts. At Camp Challenge, she becomes transfixed by Lucky, a camp employee of mysterious origin—an origin of constant speculation—and the chemistry between them is instant, and profound. The pair escape together into the wilderness to create an idyllic life far from the reach of the law.

Could have been half as long…
Revisado: 07-02-23
I listened to this as a book club pick. The characters and basic story are beautiful and compelling, the hard part was how drawn out it all is. At times, reminiscent of Girl Interrupted, about what little power adolescent girls have over their bodies and choices. Most of the white, professional adults behave abhorrently and apparently without consequences. However the reunion in final chapters was satisfying, if a looonng time coming. The author added a great deal to the story. I found reading at 1.15 or 1.20 helped me finish!

Historia
It’s spring in the tiny town of Damariscotta, a tourist haven on the coast of Maine known for its oysters and antiques. Andrew, a high school English teacher recently returned to the area, has brought his family to Ed and Steph Thatch’s sprawling riverside estate to attend a reception for the Amherst women’s lacrosse team. Back when they were all teenagers, Andrew never could have predicted that Ed, descended from a long line of lobstermen, or Steph, a decent student until she dropped out to start a family, would ever send a daughter to a place like Amherst.

Ugh, Missed the boat…
Revisado: 06-15-23
The narrator of this story is so pretentious. The story of the Thatches held great promise, but is never treated as more than a voyeuristic obsession of a shallow and unlikeable narrator/author. There was no depth given to the characters and there should have been, yet we were subjected to entire paragraphs and chapters of tedious opining from a narrator tattling out a story because why? He had nothing better to do? Half this book was irritating. I live near this town, but did not grow up here. The book tiptoed near giving a glimpse of what it is like to grow up here, and what your prospects are if you didn’t come from money, but are still smart and hardworking. Why shouldn’t you have the opportunity to prosper? This was rich territory that sadly the author treated superficially. What kept me going were the the Thatches and the fact this was part of a book club read. The narration was decent.

If you don’t understand the nature of evil, how can you be a force for good? As Caroline Myss teaches, “evil” and “good” are not simply abstract concepts - they are energies you can learn to feel in your body and soul. Myss boldly investigates the spiritual nature of evil, the many masks evil wears, the pitfalls we face as we choose to confront it, and the spiritual guideposts that will help us navigate through the darkness within and without to become “an instrument of holy power.”

Why does she yell so much?
Revisado: 04-10-23
I am a longtime fan of Caroline Myss. And there is some great content here, but honestly it becomes painful to listen to because it sounds like she’s having a tantrum. I’ll finish it, but it’s not her best delivery. I want to learn from her, not be ranted at.

This extended conversation between these two women is such a gift. Timeless and full of wisdom. I have already listened to it twice, and imagine it’s something I will keep coming back to for the important lessons it offers. I’m very grateful that someone thought to record this beautiful exchange from two of mr favorite women and teachers.

Historia
When Jenny inherits her estranged grandmother’s cottage in Sherwood Forest, she has nothing to lose - no money, no job, no friends, no family to speak of, and zero self-respect. Things can only get better.... Her grumpy but decidedly handsome new neighbour, Mack, has a habit of bestowing unsolicited good deeds on her. And when Jenny is welcomed into a rather unusual book club, life seems to finally be getting more interesting. Instead of reading, the members pledge to complete individual challenges before Christmas.

I love the Minnesota and Twin Cities references. I love most of the characters in this series. but sometimes the story becomes another story within another story and detracts. Plus the lead character needs to develop.

I was compelled to read this after Olivia Newton John's passing. I've been a lifelong fan, but I had no idea about how many adventures and how much Olivia has done for both the environment and cancer. in addition to being a fan I'm in awe of the life she built for herself and the impact she's had on the world.
