Historia
In the fourth century AD, a new faith exploded out of Palestine. Overwhelming the paganism of Rome, and converting the Emperor Constantine in the process, it resoundingly defeated a host of other rivals. Almost a thousand years later, all of Europe was controlled by Christian rulers, and the religion, ingrained within culture and society, exercised a monolithic hold over its population. But, as Peter Heather shows in this compelling new history, there was nothing inevitable about Christendom's rise to Europe-wide dominance.

One of the finest works of history I have ever
Revisado: 11-22-24
This book is revelation. One of the finest I have ever read. I am a retired historian of American history, but I have dabbled in Western Civilization and Oriental Studies all my life. This book helped me see and appreciate what we have called the "Middle Ages"--and the origins of modern Western Civilization--far more fully than any other work I have ever read. It makes the big points about major changes and transitions with clarity--and they are big and important--and then it developes them with rich illustrations that are interesting, illuminating, and apt. Ranging from late Roman, to Byzantine, to Germanic, and Islamic up through the resurgent life of the 1200s, its mastery of each era and culture is astounding. I will be reflecting on and re-reading this book with pleasure for the rest of my life.

Who are we? How do scientists define Homo sapiens, and how does our species differ from the extinct hominins that came before us? In this accessible account palaeoarchaeologist Paul Pettitt shows how the latest scientific advances, especially in genetics, are revolutionizing our understanding of human evolution. Pettitt reveals the extraordinary story of how our ancestors adapted to unforgiving and relentlessly changing climates, leading to remarkable innovations in art, technology, and society that we are only now beginning to comprehend.

Astounding overview of what scientists have learned in recent decades about the emergence of human beings.
Revisado: 10-11-24
I would have liked a review and recapitulation at the end of major events and developments covering the emergence of humans from some early point such as the domestication of fire, but this fills in huge gaps for me and helps me think about these millennia with much more clarity than I had previously known. Wonderful reader nicely captures the author’s wit.

Historia
In the 18th century, India's share of the world economy was as large as Europe's. By 1947, after two centuries of British rule, it had decreased six-fold. Beyond conquest and deception, the Empire blew rebels from cannons, massacred unarmed protesters, entrenched institutionalized racism, and caused millions to die from starvation. British imperialism justified itself as enlightened despotism for the benefit of the governed, but Shashi Tharoor takes on and demolishes this position, demonstrating how every supposed imperial "gift" was designed in Britain's interests alone.

A stunning book
Revisado: 04-28-24
This is a historical brief considering arguments provided to justify British rule in India—and then destroying them. Funny as it may sound, the author presents his case in what feels a balanced way, confessing some of his own pleasures in things English, such as the language, which he employs so masterfully. And it is the best reading by an author of his own work I have ever heard.

Historia
In this literary detective story, Robert Kanigel gives us a long overdue portrait of an Oakland druggist's son who became known as the "Darwin of Homeric studies." So thoroughly did Milman Parry change our thinking about the origins of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey that scholars today refer to a "before" Parry and an "after." Kanigel describes the "before", when centuries of readers, all the way up until Parry's trailblazing work in the 1930s, assumed that the Homeric epics were "written" texts, the way we think of most literature.

Historia
Miller, through Keats’s poetry, brilliantly resurrects and brings vividly to life, the man, the poet in all his complexity and spirit, living dangerously, disdaining respectability and cultural norms, and embracing subversive politics. Keats was a lower-middle-class outsider from a tragic and fractured family, whose extraordinary energy and love of language allowed him to pummel his way into the heart of English literature; a freethinker and a liberal at a time of repression, who delighted in the sensation of the moment.

Historia
Fascinated from an early age by the natural world in general and ants in particular, Edward Osborne Wilson's field work on them and on all social insects has vastly expanded our knowledge of their many species and fascinating ways of being. This work led to his 1975 book Sociobiology, which created an intellectual firestorm from his contention that all animal behavior, including that of humans, is governed by the laws of evolution and genetics. Subsequently, Wilson has become a leading voice on the crucial importance to all life of biodiversity.

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 10-09-23
I am an admirer of Wilson and wanted to learn more about his work and ideas, but this book was so much more than just an overview. It moved smoothly from one episode of his life to another, presenting Wilson’s ideas and discoveries in clear and understandable, but reasonably succinct descriptions. Once I started, I could not stop. Reading it or listening to it is time spent with a great soul and big, important ideas—time very well spent.

A brilliant book by Nobel Prize winner Eric R. Kandel, The Age of Insight takes us to Vienna 1900, where leaders in science, medicine, and art began a revolution that changed forever how we think about the human mind - our conscious and unconscious thoughts and emotions - and how mind and brain relate to art.

This intertwined narrative of history, art, and neuroscience actually works. It is worth reading just for the insights into Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, but there is so much more. Another magnificent gift Dr. Kandel has given us.

Historia
In the last and most complex of the Barsetshire novels, many of Trollope's best-loved characters appear, but the mood of the novel is darker and more uneasy than in earlier volumes. At the heart of the novel is the penniless Reverend Josiah Crawley, first encountered in Framley Parsonage, who in the opening of the book is accused of theft, creating a public scandal that threatens to tear the community apart.

Historia
Historian Orville Vernon Burton and civil rights lawyer Armand Derfner shine a powerful light on the Court's race record - a legacy at times uplifting, but more often distressing and sometimes disgraceful. For nearly a century, the Court ensured that the 19th-century Reconstruction Amendments would not truly free and enfranchise African Americans. And the 21st century has seen a steady erosion of commitments to enforcing hard-won rights.

An important big-picture view of the Court’s history with rich, compelling story details and, to me, very clear and understandable explanations of key legal points. I hope the justices will all read it, but I am very glad I did. The observations of the closing chapter are particularly powerful.

Historia
Can You Forgive Her? is the first of the six in the Palliser series. Trollope inextricably binds together the issues of parliamentary election and marriage, of politics and privacy. The values and aspirations of the governing stratum of Victorian society are ruthlessly examined, and none remains unscathed. But above all Trollope focuses on the predicament of women. 'What should a woman do with her life?' asks Alice Vavasor of herself, and this theme is echoed by every other woman in the audiobook.
