Very mediocre plot. And it was worse than that! It was foolish and poorly written. With a reader who made no effort to connect.

Historia
Simon Russell Beale stars in this BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of John le Carré's first novel, which introduced his most famous character, George Smiley. This dramatisation, set in London in the late 1950s, finds Smiley engaged in the humdrum job of security vetting. But when a Foreign Office civil servant commits suicide after an apparently unproblematic interview, Smiley is baffled. Refusing to believe that Fennan shot himself, Smiley decides to investigate.

Historia
The best-selling author of 20 novels, Philip Kerr has won a devoted following - and there are none more ardent than those who devour his Bernie Gunther series. In 1934, Bernie found himself in Berlin, where he was caught up in intrigue surrounding Hitler, America, and the upcoming Olympiad. Two decades later, Bernie surfaces in Havana. But an old associate has appeared there as well - and might spell trouble of a decidedly deadly nature.

Big disappointment
Revisado: 08-23-17
What would have made If the Dead Rise Not better?
It was a bad book. I have enjoyed all of the others. But this one is far, far, too long. No interesting or coherent plot. And boring.
Has If the Dead Rise Not turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
Any additional comments?
Just not a good book.

From a veteran insider with over 20 years’ experience in the US Foreign Service comes a taut, insightful thriller of global intrigue and behind-the-scenes international politics. Sam Trainor’s career of overseas work coupled with a penchant for being outspoken has left him on the outside of the competitive Washington establishment. Formerly the top South Asia expert in the State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research, Trainor has moved to the private sector, working as an analyst for the consulting firm Argus Systems.

This is a ridiculous book.
Revisado: 04-11-17
Would you try another book from Matthew Palmer and/or Fred Sanders?
The plot is ridiculous. It deliberately changes history. And the reader sounds like a teenager.
Has Secrets of State turned you off from other books in this genre?
Only books by this author.
Would you be willing to try another one of Fred Sanders’s performances?
Only if I knew the author well and liked his works.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Anger at its stupidity. And my waste of money.

Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Very disappointing and not worth the time.
Revisado: 06-19-12
This book did absolutely nothing to advance the plot. There was no move towards any resolutions. In fact, all it did was introduce dozens of new characters, drag out the old stories, and go on interminably. Almost as though Martin is thumbing his nose at the reader and saying he can drag this on forever.

Anthony Powell's universally acclaimed epic encompasses a four-volume panorama of twentieth-century London. Hailed by Time as "brilliant literary comedy as well as a brilliant sketch of the times," A Dance to the Music of Time opens just after World War I. Amid the fever of the 1920s and the first chill of the 1930s, Nick Jenkins and his friends confront sex, society, business, and art.

Third time I have read/or listened to these books
Revisado: 09-10-11
Each time I read these books I find new parts that resonate for me today. This is the first time I have listened to them, the entire series, and have enjoyed them immensely. The reader is brilliant. The individuals are all distinctive and the humor and irony in Powell's writing becomes very evident.
I look forward to listening again in a few years time.
