When the eccentric and enigmatic Barker takes the case, he must hire an assistant, and out of all who answer an ad for a position with "some danger involved", he chooses downtrodden Llewelyn, a gutsy young man with a murky past.

This is a Great Series
Revisado: 04-08-21
I really enjoy the history, the story and the narrator. The Boni series is very ingenious employing an aboriginal detective to solve crimes in the outback of Australia in the 1900's. The language, the accent used by the narrator makes for a very entertaining journey.

Historia
In the American Civil War, or the War between the States, three dashing cavalry leaders - Stuart, Forrest, and Mosby - so captured the public imagination that their exploits took on a glamour, which we associate - as did the writers of the time - with the deeds of the Waverley characters and the heroes of chivalry. Of the three leaders, Colonel John S. Mosby (1833 - 1916), was, perhaps, the most romantic figure. In the South, his dashing exploits made him one of the great heroes of the "Lost Cause". In the North, he was painted as the blackest of redoubtable scoundrels.

Too Little Story

Too many facts that were very difficult to follow. I liked the story of his life and things he did, but there were way too many details that were hard to follow about certain events. For example his defense of General Stuart.

Arriving in Cairo for another thrilling excavation season, Amelia is relaxing in a well-earned bubble bath in her elegant hotel suite in Cairo when a man with a knife protruding from his back staggers into the bath chamber and utters a single word - "murder" - before collapsing on the tiled floor, dead. Among the few possessions he carried was a sheet of paper with Amelia's name and room number.

Better than I ever Thought
Revisado: 08-04-17
Would you consider the audio edition of The Painted Queen to be better than the print version?
I think Barbara Rosenblat is a great narrator, on the same level as Jim Dale. She really makes the book fun.
What other book might you compare The Painted Queen to and why?
All the other Elizabeth Peter's books. They are fun, engaging and well written and read.
What does Barbara Rosenblat bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I was worried whether Joan Hess could pull this book off, but she did an amazing job!. But it is Barbara Rosenblat that is the critical consistency. She, in my mind, makes all the difference as she interprets the characters, the humor and style of Ms Peters.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I enjoyed all of it. Especially the interchange between characters.
Any additional comments?
I was worried whether a co author could finish and faithfully represent the style and ability of Elizabeth Peter's talents. But, I I thought Joan Hess did a great job. I wish she'd continue the "franchise." I enjoyed this book as much as any in the Emilia Peabody series. I was very pleased.
